I'm trying to buy my first outboard for a boat my father has given me. I'm looking at a 115h and have a question about shaft length.

Some of the motors I've found have a 20" shaft. Is this normal? Should I look for one that is more than 20"?

Thanks!!! Very Happy

20" shaft (short shaft) is what you would need on a bay type boat 25" would be a long shaft and is more suited for deep water running boats

The shaft length you need depends on the depth of your transom. Measure from the top of the cutout to the keel line. It will be either 20" or 25". Buy an engine that matched that length. Even if you have a jackplate you need that length.

By the way, the shaft length refers to the distance from where the mounting bracket sits on the transom to the cavitation plate.

You need to find out what your boat was designed for, 20 or 25 and purchase the correct length, this will save you frustration and money adapters.

I currently have a long shaft on my boat, it is designed for a short shaft, CMC offers a riser plate @ $150.00 that will raise the motor, you will add unwanted weight to the rear of the boat.
