I have alot of time off for vacation and wanted to spend some of it out learning and refining my technique for deep water re-entry on my kayak (actually, I have no technique, I fall out, and then look like a walrus trying to get out on an ice flow which is too small for it). That said, I obviously do not want to practice this immediately in deep water and was wondering if you all could point me in the right direction of a condusive body of water in the area. I have not used my yak as much as I wanted because I am afraid I will fall out beyond the surf and not be able to get back on. I was hoping for a spot where I could do this in shallow water first but have limited knowledge of potential spots. Any help is most appreciated. _________________ "Careful man, there's a beverage here!" -- The Dude |

Boerne City Lake is a nice place up north on IH10. There's a few bass in there to keep you busy when you're actually in your yak.
You can even pick up a few new toys along the way at bass pro.
There used to be a small gator in that lake up until a few years ago. A "concerned" citizen took care of him with a few shots to the dome.
Besides BCL, there is Braunig and Calaveras on the south side. The Guadalupe River and Canyon Lake are two other options. I like BCL because it's small, quiet and no motor boats allowed. Swimming pool would probably suit you best for reentry though.
Let me know if you have other questions. |

The best thing to do is practice in a swimming pool. Boerne City Lake is deep, windy and choppy at times. The second best place to practice would be a river with a slow current and not too deep. You can practice swimming up on the kayak at first then practice other methods as you feel more comfortable in deeper water. I always carry a good 12ft piece of rope that I can tie off to the kayak and use it looped as a step to get back on the kayak. Of course a swimming pool does not compare to ocean swells but its better to practice than not. Of course, its cool right now and not the best time to practice. Read up on some techniques so you can at least have an idea of what to do.

I use a couple of small lakes up near windcrest to refine my kayak ability. Lot's of small bass in those lake (near O'connor). Good fishing in the colder months. _________________ I don't run 'cause it makes me tired. I don't lift weights 'cause they're heavy. -Charles Barkley |

Go to www.texaskayakfisherman.com and type in re-entry in the search box. This topic gets lots of opinions and techniques. You may also want to go to Austin canoe and Kayak and see when the have some classes. They are located near the Outlets. _________________ Do not argue with an idiot. boerne lake is not bad.. you can get by the boat dock to shore..
but with this wind howling. done care what body of water you try its going to be cold and fun..
and yes boerne lake does have plenty of bass in the middle that love to eat artis..
there is no one at the booth for the winter so it is free and not busy..
also if you do have problems getting back up, it is not that big of a lake that you can swim to where you can step back up..
as for taking a drink in the ocean, with the waves and such it can be fun to get back on . . _________________ Fish and Hunt Baby.... so tight lines and clear scopes. |

Try Calaveras Lake close to HWY 181 & Loop 1604. Once you enter the gate turn to your left and drive all the way down. There is a kayak launching area with shallow water. Usually a few yaks out there, I don't have one myself but see them there often. |

Dude, that means that it would be realistic practice (AND incentive) for learning the "eskimo roll"!!! _________________ Dave

| Where ever you decide to try this, don't do it alone and use a PFD. There are alot of yakers in and around San Antonio, and I'm sure you'll be able to find someone to join you. There is a group of guys that fish Lake Calavera on a regular basis. You can join texaskayakfisherman and then the SA Chapter. |
