|
|
| This is my first post, want to say that it is nice to see such a diverse and intelligent group of outdoorsmen who truly love and respect the outdoors. My question is, has anyone used ballyhoo for bait around Baffin Bay, Laguna Madre, and how much success did you have? Again, great site and all comments appreciated! |

| Thanks for the reply Alfish. Love to use lures but at the same time also interested in the success of ballyhoo as natural baits. Just curious about those sharp nose critters, first time ever hearing about them being good baits for trout and reddy reds. |

I have netted ballyhoos off the jetties and the big reds slurp them down like candy. _________________ Fishing and Kayaking its a rough life but somebody has to do it.

I castnetted one at the jetty once, gave him to a friend who put him on the hook & immediately caught a 25" trout. I have yet to use them on reds.

Have used Ballyhoo as bait for number of years in the Lower Laguna Madre primarily when night fishing. We generally use them as cut bait but the smaller ones can be fished whole with the beak cut off either dead or alive. They work equally well for reds and trout. Catfish and dogfish love to eat them also when fished on the bottom with the occasional eel thrown in for some excitement.
I also have friends who swear by them when drift fishing during the day. They either work them like a lure or cut them up and chunk them down wind to fish the bottom and take up slack as the boat drifts to the bait then start all over again.
We have great success dip netting them at night under a spot light in the baywaters around the convention center at SPI. Somtimes the ballyhoo fishing is more exciting than the fishing afterwards. Otherwise most bait shops stock them at a hefty price.

| I cast netted some ballyhoo at Charlie's Pasture Pier in Port Aransas. It was late September on an incoming tide. Everyone was catching dink trout, so I freelined one hooked through the lip. Picked up a 23 incher under the lights at the t-head. |

I have used them at night under lights. I hooked them through the top of the eyes wit a treble hook and freelined them alive. Sometimes allowing the fish to run with it FOREVER was the hard part. I've never tried them off the surf, but if I can keep them in a livewell long enough I'm going to give it a shot...........hopefully soon.
