I'm going shark fishing off the coast with my buddy this Sunday. The only problem is we have never been before. We have fished for kings and other type of fish but not big sharks, so I have a few questions?
We are using my friends DONZI that goes about 60 to 65 mph so distance is not a problem.

How far out should we go to catch alot of sharks over 7ft (prefer MAKO)

What is the best way to make Chum? Does the chum at Academy work?

What is the best bait??

Is this a good time of year for shark fishing??

Thanks

You mighttry roys for some jack fish or bonito. They sometimes have some there. That would be the best bet for good bait or try to catch your bait, nothing like a live fish bleeding in the water.
If ya have a meat grinder, buy some chum from like academy or sometimes out at PortA they have bags of chum fish and grind them up with some fish oil. This now be a bit extreme but if ya hunt, go shoot a deer or hog and try to catch the blood in a bucket and keep the heart and liver from the animal and use it in your chum. Sounds gross but it works. I actually caught a 47 inch red fish in hog heart, its the biggest red I ever caught, its still out there I guess we let it go so if ya use a hog heart and ya catch a big red, ask him his name we called him fred!!!
Hope that helped. I am not to sure on the exact distance, you might want to go kind of out there and try to find a rig or some shrimp boats way out.

good luck and
keep on fishing
