|
|
| I was curious what some of you think is the best 12 - 16 lb fishing line on the market. I recently bought some SpiderWire XXX 12 lb and it has to be the worst line I have ever purchased. I've lost countless fish because of the line breaking, I've casted heard a pop and their was my leader flying into the abyss of the water, it bunches up on me. Overall horrible line. Thanks in advance for any replies. |

Berkely Big Game is one line that you can count on, if I was going to put mono on any reel that is what I would buy. _________________

Last year I switched from Trilene XL after years of using it. I tried P-Line CX Premium and Power Pro side by side for a weekend.
I chose the P-Line. It is a coploymer line that is flurocarbon coated. It is also a small diameter line. I found it to cast better than the braided line. I found it to be stronger than regular mono. I have been using it in 8#, 12#, and 15# for 1.5 years. I love it.
One note about small diameter lines tho...... you need to check your line above your leader often for nicks and abrasions. These lines are stronger but much smaller so a small nick cuts say 25% of the line verses maybe 10% of the old thicker mono. When you feel nicks re-tie or you will break off some good fish. Other than that, I think P-LINE is darn good. _________________ GoinCoastal aka Cap'nSherbet |

| Bro, what are you are fishing for? if you are fishing for trout and reds, regardless of what you see others using you do not need that big of line. i grew up in Baffin (ricardo, TX) and for the past 10 years i have used Ande 10lb, and i always tie on a length of Seaguar 20lb flourocarbon. No swivels. use a blood or a double surgeons loop knot. I have never had my line break, this is not an exaggeration.....NEVER. know your drag and how to fight teh fish and you will have no problem. and with teh lighter line you will be able to cast soft plastics on a 1/16 or 1/8 oz. jig-head farther and easier. i do not even own a 1/4 oz. jig head. you can do more with the lighter bait. yes you can cast them with heavier line, but trust me it is easier with 10 lb, at times i even use 8lb. i am trying to jog my memory but I think the heaviest fish i pulled out of baffin on 10 lb was a 29 lb bull red last new years day. throw that big stuff away. buy some Ande 10lb back-country......later |

| I vote for Berkley Fireline in the "smoke" color. Small diameter and very resistent to abbrasion. Takes a little getting used to but I've lost much fewer fish due to line failure, especially when fishing around rocks or shell. |

If I'm using a baitcasting reel I use 10lb. big game for bay fishing, if using a spinning reel I use 14lb. fireline. I like the fireline on spinning reels because it doesn't have memory problems like mono does.

| i have used many different line from berkly fire line to spiderwire, between the two i would have to say fireline whoops spiderwire, but spiderwire holds color longer and is rounder, fireline is flatter and makes aloy of noise in the guides. big game is good, ande is alright, p-line is good, sufix is pricy, but is some good stuff. |

I have tried many differnt lines out there, but Spiderwire Super-Mono 17lb is my favorite for the surf. Low memory, great castability, never lost a fish yet using it, low diameter. Good stuff. In my opinion, big game has too much memory, and is thick. Firewire is good, but expensive. I still have yet to try some spiderwire braided. Flak tells me that it is good to back your reel with 100 or 150yrds of braid then mono on top, then a shock leader. I would say he knows what he is doing. _________________ Give a man a fish, feed him for a day.

| spiderwire braid is strong and virtually indestructible especially on the jetty, but digs in on your reel and cuts your guides. spiderwire fusion fixed the cut guides and the digging problem, but for some reason with the fusion casting into the wind is a big pain. it gets locked in the spool and i always lose leaders and weights from it busting off on the cast. which is why i gave it up. but if you are fishing on jetties or reefs spiderwire fusion is the way to go. |

I've been converted from Big Game to Power Pro.
I generally run the 20lb strength, 6lb diameter braid in the moss green color.
The diameter is very small, easy to cast. There is no memory. And it is TOUGH stuff...most nail clippers and scissors have trouble with it.
My only complaints are the following:
The Line digs in (can be prevented by very tight spooling, but it's hard to keep it tight when reeling in light lures/leaders)
The line will catch when I cast, thus resulting in me chunking my lure, popping cork, or leader into infinity and beyond. However, this is also caused in part by me slinging the HELL out of my rods.
The discoloration is a bit annoying, but I have noticed that it isn't as bad as it was when I first started using power pro.
To help with the initial cost of the line, spool up the majority of your reel with your favorite mono, then put a 75 or so top shot of braid on top of the mono. This will give you the strength of the braid for casting and fighting fish...but you will still have the mono if you get a line burner hooked up. This way you can spool 2+ reels with one box, making the cost much less per reel.
If I have to run MONO, I use either Big Game or ANDE, in Green or Ande's pink/gold color.
Take care

Here is Power Pro/braided spectra tip for yall...........
first of all, it has to have a mono backing on the spool. It is sooo slick it will spin around spool if you don't.
but here is the real tip...... when your braided line starts to wear, strip it off the reel and re-tie it to your mono backing using the worn end. Now teh less used end is next to your lure. Doubles the life of braid...........
I just hate braids. I don't like the sound going thru the guides. i don't like the wind knots. I don't like cutting it with my clippers (too much work and time when I am fishing). _________________ GoinCoastal aka Cap'nSherbet |

Big Game is cheap and dependable. Its tough and abrasion resistant. Its not bad with casting either.
Small stuff don't go over 12 lb. I prefer 10 lb on my trout and red setups.
The stuff really breaks much higher than the rated 10#.
Reels have drags for a reason. If you are breaking off you need to re-evaluate your knots and your line after a few casts and make sure your drag is not too tight. It should only be 20% of the breaking strength. You should check the last 20 feet or so of your line very frequently
Most breakoffs are due to knot tying. Poor practice and not lubing the knot when cinching down the knot.
Practice your knots. Most lines are very comparable.
Use a line that YOU feel confident with. If you don't have confidence in what you are using or are unsure of your choice. You have already lost.

| another tip for braid is it can be recolored with a permanent marker. there is no way to color spectra fiber so the color eventually will wear off. |

I was a big game user until Kcon and the regulars started using Power pro and did all the testing. Ive caught some really nice fish with 10-12 Big Game, it teaches one how to set a drag and use your rod to fight the fish.
If you want a winch mounted on a rod, then get the power pro! The stuff is tough as nails and casts like a dream.
While fishing with Charlie Golla I caught a 23lb Jack with 8lb dia. Power Pro. using the Fat Mamma lure he lent me. Power Pro is awesome!
