Decided to head on down to PINS despite the weather forecast of rain. A friend of mine (Tommy) and I headed down to the coast after work on Friday. After a stop at Cosway for some ice and a copy of the new Salty Angler ( no my pictures from my last trip didn’t make it in), we got on the beach about 1am. The temperature was in the low 50’s and it was misting most of the night. After a couple of unsuccessful hours of night fishing, we decided to get some sleep.
Woke Saturday morning and headed down the beach. As we got down the beach, we startled one doe and she took off into the dunes. Moved on down a couple more miles and there stood four more in the middle of the beach. These weren’t in any hurry to move along and they stood in the dunes as we drove by.
Finally made it down to the 17mm and decided to give it a try. The surf was rough, but very fishable. Tommy was the first to strike with a nice 24” Red.
After about an hour with only whiting to show, we moved on down into the 20’s. No baitfish to be found and nothing to show for our stops in the 20’s. Decided to make the trek to the 41mm. The whiting were thick on shrimp and ghost shrimp. I managed an 18” rat and Tommy continued his assault on the whiting.
At 4:30pm, I hooked into my first keeper red of the day, a beauty at 26”.
A few minutes later I landed a 24” Red and about 30minutes later I landed my limit at 23”.
As darkness fell, Tommy landed this nice 20” Black Drum.
I also landed one more rat red as we were pulling in for the night. The weather warmed and we sat down to a warm meal and a warmer bonfire.
Sunday morning showed promises of a beautiful day and the sun showed for the first time this weekend. Still no baitfish, but I landed one more Red at 25” and several more whiting. Total for this trip was 5 Reds, 1 Black Drum and several nice Whiting.
Headed off the beach at 11:30am for the trek back to San Antonio. The driving was great at low tide and driving the “posted” speed limit, we made it off the beach in great time. Even had a minute to stop and have a quick chat with Nick, first time meeting this mate.
The moral to this story is when you are ready to fish, go fishing. This trip turned out to be an awesome trip. The weather was better than expected, this fish cooperated and time with friends is invaluable.

Very nice fish. What was all the action on the pins sunday? I was at the 3mm and a park ranger drove by and stopped and made a u turn and came back to me and asked if I had seen a blue suv going north. A little while later a corpus christi police suv passed me heading south and a few minutes after that another one came by. About a hour later 2 white vans with no markings on them came by heading south one was pulling and empty trailer. And then a little while later I saw a black pickup truck heading north and a park ranger was beside him and a cc police car was behind. I thought that they may have been escorting him off the beach or something. _________________ Fishing and Kayaking its a rough life but somebody has to do it.

Hey Cliff,
You DID make it in. You are on Page 29 in the Nov26th issue. Congrats!
Ron Behnke makes the call on what pictures go in. I can only pass them on to him.

Tyler,
Thanks for the email, I picked up an earlier copy and didn't see it. The best picture is of my Son Corey on page 20. It was his first time catching a Red and he caught his limit that day. Always enjoy your article and the magazine.
See ya on the sand,
Cliff
