I'm going to try and persuade someone in my family to buy a 'large' surf casting rig for christmas.
I want something that I can chase jacks with, and not have to worry...as well as possibly landing a few small sharks without a problem. I'm not looking for a winch, but something that will handle anything from a 3' bull red to a 5' bull shark, and everything in between.
What would you recommend? I've been looking at Newells and Avet Reels. My only problem is that I am not familiar enough with them to know what size is what, because I'm not familiar with their model #'s.
I would also consider a larger shimano casting reel, or a Penn GT series.
Any ideas? I want to stay away from Abu Garcia, as I've already got a 6500
Thanks

Best: Breakwayusa.com 11-9 or a 13-6 1Pc 2PC with a Diawa GW/SL30 or a Penn GS535 mag'd.
2nd Best TICA or Ocean Master 12-ft Heavy rod with same reels as above.
No one surf cats an Avet yet - too fast. I own Avets but they are not for surf casting.
look at this thread:

FlakMan,
Thanks for the info. I was thinking the same thing on the Avets...they seem to be more of a boat reel...but I can't find any specific info on them. I like their construction and reputation...but they need to provide info so we can see what they are all about.
As for the Diawa vs. Penn, do they both need to be Mag'd, or just the Penn?
Also, I read your post on the thread you linked me to.
How do you manage 30ft of shock leader? Doesn't the knot cause a problem when casting? What type of know, uni to uni?
Thanks

ShawnQ,
Flakman is right on, can't beat the Breakaway 11'-9'' rod. The Diawa Sealine 30 is one of the best reels,"Hands down" I've ever used in the surf. I've had two of them in my setup for about a year now with no problems. Landed shark up to five feet, a 50-inch kingfish, stopped several tarpon over six foot and countless Jacks.
If you go with the No. two pick rod, I've had more luck on the TICA 11' than the 12', and the 10' is too short for the Sealine 30.
The Penn 525 & 535 mag are good reels but I've found the 525 just a bit short on line, however a 525 on a 10' TICA sure feels good after a long day of casting.
Shock-leader knots go through the eyes just fine. Stay away from the level-winds unless you plan on re-tieing every 20 to 30 cast.

Abu Garcia 7000
very smooth, casts extremely well, almost no backlash, works well with 20 to 25lb test line. Good drag for the bigger gamefish but not sure if it can handle a big shark or large tuna's without damaging the reel.
Penn GTI series - 320/330
strong powerful reels with big drags. This was my workhorse reel for 7 years until I broke down and bought the GTS555 and 245LD. Took a lot of abuse in the surf from the elements and some big fish with these reels and it never failed. I removed the line guide because I did not want to mess with pawl failures when fighting a fish. 30lb test works well here.
Penn 555 and 245LD
Just magged the 555 and it casts well before and after the conversion. 245 seems to be a very powerful reel and also casts well. So far I like both. You can overmag a reel and that will affect your casting distance. I think I used 2 or 3 rare earth magnets in the 555.
Your decision depends on the $ amount you want to spend and confidence and ability to cast these reels. I use all of the reels mentioned above for the surf or boat and have been very satisfied with their performance. Rods are from 6ft offshore to 12ft surf. |

The Diawa GW30 is a great reel and does not need to be mag'd if it's et up right. The Penn GS535 does not need to be mag'd either if you just pop out the centrigual brakes and use at least 30# line. _________________ Ahh sand between my toes! |

The spool is probably heavy and is not designed for casting so if you do cast it the spool will spin too fast causing a backlash from hell.

| My vote is the Diawa 30 shv @ $135.00 or the Grand wave 30 @$199 Throw them as hard as you want and the spool stops when the bait lands. No need for magging. The 20's in each model are a little lighter and are both great reels but probably will be a little light is you hang a 6'shark. The 11'9 is a kickass rod for any of these reels and will throw 4 oz out of sight with the 20 series reels. |

The Avets spin great but spools are heavy and like to keep on spinning. You have to use the drag washers to slow this reel down and that really cuts into your casting distance. Only the Avet SX reel is close to suitable for surf casting. Some are looking at magging it but that is not available yet.
I only use levelwind reels when I am casting lures. For bait casting the level winds just cut down on your casting distance and is just one more thing to maintain or break.
Great surf reels are the Diawa GW20 for 20# test line and GW30 for more line capacity or heavier lines. Penn 525Mag is a great reel for distance casting with 17 to 20# test line. The Penn GS535 is a great reel for heavier line casting. I use a Abu 6500 CSM for a lure casting levelwind with 17# Sufix line and use 80# braided line as shock leader to get a small knot thru the levelwind. I throw 2 to 3 oz lures on my 10-6 or 4 to 6 oz lures on my 11-9 Breakway rods using this levelwind ABU 6500 CSM reel. _________________ Ahh sand between my toes! |
