Charlie sent in this report yesterday. Looks like they will be able to survive this winter
Chris & I hit the sand at 10:00 AM Saturday morning and found near perfect conditions. Green water and excellent driving all the way to the high banks were it got a little rough to about the 26m. A little past the 30m we came up on this orange object on the beach. As we came closer, we realized it was a basket full of fish so we stopped and fished until the box was full."Not really, I just made that up because it sounded good".


Now for what really happened,
Saturday we fell in behind Tarzan in the 30s and had a good Pompano bite that lasted all evening. Tarzan picked up one trout and a few Spanish Mac's and we got a few slot redfish.



We camped in the deep 40s where we had Big Daddy join us. Sunday morning came fast & furious and found us right in the middle of a Jack-Crevalle invasion. At sunup Jacks started raiding the wade & first gut for as far as the eye could see in both directions. Big Daddy caught the first Jack and then Chris caught a fish he's been chasing all year, "Yes Finally" a twenty pound Jack-Crevalle on his Fly-Rod. After a little coaching from Capt. Billy last week, and the use of Sanderfer's secrete little Jack-Fly, Chris lands his first, a 19.5 pound Jack-Crevalle on a Fly-rod .



The Jack-crevalle action lasted till around 10:00 AM and when it started to slow, we picked camp and headed south. Around the 50m we caught up with a large concentration of Pelicans feeding in the first bar. Immediately we sighted Jacks plowing the bar but this time there were also Sharks in the wade gut. Chris jumps out and sight cast a chunk of cut Jack to a large Bull in the wade gut. The Bull looks his bait over but swims on. I made a cast out over the bar with a 3oz Spooner out-cast, and to my surprise, one of the larger Black-tip sharks went charging over the bar after my lure. The Shark hooks up and almost spools me before he stops. Thirty minutes later I land and release a five footer that is my first ever taken on a lure. It was a real surprise to land a shark of this size on 20 pound mono and a 3oz Spooner, I guess those Spooners are about good for anything in the surf.



Working back north after lunch we got back into a good little Pompano bite at the 45m where we topped of the box with some really big Spanish Mac's. Big Daddy got in on the action and caught his first ever Spanish Mac.



The final count at the end of the trip was 32 Pompano, 4 Spanish Mac's, 2 Redfish & 6 Whiting.


All of the Reds & Mac's were caught on live finger mullet and the Pompano once again fell victim to those incredible Fish-Bites. On Saturday the Pompano really liked the white crab flavor but on Sunday Orange and Green Shrimp flavor worked better. I would recommend taking a variety of colors and flavors if your heading down. Big Daddy also caught a rare Palometo on Sunday. Chris also caught our first oversized Black drum of the year, but she got off right at the bank. One other thing that bares mentioning, Sunday morning I found one of my 4/0 missing when we got up. After following the drag marks in the sand I found the rod about 75 yards up in the dunes. Somehow we left a piece of bait on the hook and the coyotes did there best to eat it without getting hooked, "We got lucky and got the whole rig back without harm to the coyote".

Nice job Charlie and crew! Thats a nice jack on fly and the to top it off with a BT on a lure is awesome. We lost a nice Bull shark on a Spooner early this year when we were trying to reach the Bonita. The spooner didn't even hit the bottom before the shark grabbed it and started ripping off line until it was tail whacked.

Mando, be persistent and you'll catch one before you know it. Some of the best Jack-crevalle action we have in the surf zone is from now till mid Dec.

Skipjack, thanks for the kind words. The only secret is to keep bait in the water as much as possible and move around until you find the action. A lot of folks spend to much time in the wrong location and don't mix it up. Things will change daily or even hourly in the surf zone and you've got to adjust to it.

Rip, those Spooners work on just about everything in the surf. We had a few Tarpon on them back in Sept. but none made it to the bank,"Maybe next year?".

Mapag, Chris was using a top secret prototype jack fly developed by & for Capt. Billy. I'm not all that sure how the leader was made up but Billy told Chris that the leader meets IGFA certifications for 20lb mono. The BT caught on the Spooner had a five foot section of 80lb mono leader and the main line was 25lb big-game. (Not what we normally use for sharks)

Congrats. That is truly a stellar catch on a spooner and 20 pound test. I would have loved to have seen that reel sing.

show my ignorance here but what exactly is a spooner? was on pins sun chasing jacks and had my boy with me throwing yozuris, me the fly and my buddy perry caught 2 jacks on the fly. what do you guys recommend for my boy to throw artificial on his casting rig for jacks. also i always keep shark rig on 12 wt fly rod at the ready what type of shock leader do you recommend? thanks for any help.

The Spooner is a slab spoon used for long range casting. The 2 & 3 oz versions will really increase your distance, and sometimes distance is very critical because jacks will frequent the deeper bars as the day wears on. Spooner came out with a 1oz version of the Out-Cast model that works very well on smaller tackle. Nick Myers at the Breakaway shop stocks a good supply or you can order them on line at www.breakawayusa.com

As far as a recommendation for your son, Jacks are real sporty fish and they'll hit just about anything you throw at them. Lone Jacks are a little more finicky, but when their in a group they'll hit anything shiny, flashy or noisy. A 1/2 or 3/4 oz gold or silver spoon also works really well. Top-waters also work on the calmer days. Most jacks range in size under 20lb and can be easily landed on lighter 12lb tackle, there are however some out there over 20lb that will spool a small reel rather fast.
