I have been reading the fishing report for PI but am unfamiliar with the area. Is there somewhere I can find maps to understand the jargon i.e. PINS 30, 50 etc. Thanks

Dont feel bad gmw, it took me a while too. Find bob hall pier, then drive south on the sand (dont think it is actually south) and about 7-8 miles down you will come to some post blocking vehicle access. These are called the north sticks. From there you see an access road that takes you to the hard top park rd 22. Hang a left when you hit the pavement and you will see a station. This is the entrance to PINS I thing. After you go through there it is several more miles to hit the beach again. You will pass a pretty large building to your left and the entrance to mallequett park (please forgive my spelling if I spelled it wrong) Keep going past that and it turns into sand again. Here is where the mile markers start, so take notice of your odometer reading. There are mile post every 5 miles. Never been past the 20 mm due to rough sand and limited to 2wd truck. All the way at the end is the mansfield jettys. North of bob hall pier is mustang island and I think the fish pass jettys are there. After that it is very good driving all the way down the beach to the port a jettys and horace caldwell pier, just watch out for tourist and kids playing, this is where most of the swimmers and tourist hang out, and there are condos close to the beach in several areas. I am still learning my self but I hope this helps out, once I figured out all of this info, the rest is fairly easy to comprehend.

You really need a 4wd to explore the 60 miles of PINS. There's a "4wd only" sign at the 4.6mm, but right now you could get to the 17 or so(in 2wd)because the driving is so good, but don't go past there with no experience and only 2wd. You'll just end up cutting an hour off of some nice fisherman's valuable time. Don't get me wrong, we all are happy to help out stuck trucks but when they are where they shouldn't be it's a little ......well, you get it. There are wrecks down there that we refer to, and like above, there are blue mile marker(mm) signs almost every 5 miles. Storms have taken a few, but set your trip log when the pavement ends so you know where you are. Big Shell starts at the 17.5+-, and goes to the 30+-. If you keep going, eventually you willl hit the Mansfield Jetty, where you have to fish or go back north. Come up with some more specific questions and we'll be happy to answer. Good luck..............Kyle

As far as my experiences have gone, there ain't always gold at the end of the rainbow. I have caught just as many fish in the 1-20mm as further down south. However, the water down south is usually better from what I've seen. The guts are deeper and there isn't as much seaweed.
