Big John's LTTE breaks a few day's dry spell with center stage on the editorial page. Well said, Big John.

Pat Suter emailed this to me Friday:
Hi: I just got home after hearing Garrett talk on the development at the beach. He is now saying that Intrawest plans a 1.2 billion dollar development and all they are talking about closing for pedestrians is the 4200 and another 1800 feet north of the seawall. No mention of anything south of the seawall. He also said that they are working hard to see if they can get some access to the south jetty. He promised that the city council will put forth a charter amendment for forbid any further closing without a vote.

The city council will pass an ordinance closing the beach at Padre on March 21, so we can gear up.

No Freebies

It is unfair, and ridiculous of Jim Barnette (Viewpoints Forum, Feb. 1Cool to lump everyone's opinions together, as if there were only two distinct groups of opinions in Corpus Christi.

Among those opposing closure of the beaches to vehicular access, the large majority of us are not against developments being built. What we are against is subsidizing this development by creating a quasi-private beach and marina. Developers realize this is a prime location, and someone will step in and build regardless. Most of us are not against developing the bayfront either, which is an area ideal for, and in dire need of, revitalization. I am only against giving more away in subsidies than might be brought in.

Furthermore, building What-aburger Field and the American Bank Centers were great ideas. Both of these projects revitalized areas that had fallen into disrepair. The same kinds of projects need to be undertaken to revitalize the bayfront.

The beach does not need revitalization. It is an excellent resource that will attract development regardless of whether vehicles are allowed on it or not. Having an open beach that anyone can easily access by means of their vehicle is what makes our beaches such a valuable resource.

Glad to see it appear finally Very Happy , PO'd to see it edited Mad . One sentence that was edited was:

"Among those opposing closure of the beaches to vehicular access, the large majority of us are not against developments being built."

Should read:

Among those opposing closure of the beaches to vehicular access, the large majority of us are not against developments being built, as the Caller-Times would have most believe.
