|
|
Took my wife and Granddaughter down towards OSO Bridge a few minutes ago to watch the 9:15 fireworks. Thought that would be a nice uncrowded area to watch the show. Wrong . Hadn't been there 10 minutes before an NAS Police car pulls up behind me. Guy gets out , flashlight in the eyes and wants some ID. Takes my license and goes back to his vehicle. Returns to tell me I was on Federal property and to leave.I wasn't 200 yards past the Baptist learning Center. Not even to the bridge. Sure enough there are now signs just past the Baptist Learning Center telling you that you are not authorized to enter and your vehicle and person are subject to search. I asked about fishing and he said I could fish but I could not watch the fireworks with my wife and g'daughter. Huh? What nitwit thought that rule up. I guess I can't ride my bike or kayak or just chill out by the water either. Anyone have a clue?? Those signs were not there last weekend when my wife and I went yakking down by the gate.

| I'm glad you posted this. I've been wondering what is going on around the bridge. I've been fishing over there for years and ride my bicycle there almost every day. Almost everytime I'm there I see the NAS cops shaking someone down. They have not bothered me while fishing but have given me some pretty dirty looks when I'm on my bike. I'm not not trying to argue or be a smart with you but I have noticed those new signs being there for several months. I can't remember the exact wording but I don't think it says no trespassing just says that your on government property and subject to search. I really don't understand why you can go there and fish but can't stop and watch the fireworks. Sounds nuts to me too. I'm sorry you had such a bad time just trying to enjoy some time with your family. I hope some one from the base can step in on this post and tell us what the specifics of this deal are. thanks guest Carlton |

I always understood it was federal property up to the bridge not past it. _________________ Fish hard, fish the Bluff. Surrounded by water!

If the signs have been there , I stand corrected as i have not noticed them before. That being said , what is the purpose of making us leave? He didn't say he was just checking or wondering if something was wrong. He said we were on Federal property and we could not park past the signs near the B.L.C. and to leave. Is this a night time thing only?
Last Sunday we yakked off the beach and parked within 200 yards of the gate.
Maybe i just got some young buck showing off.

| I don't think it is night time only I see them there in the daytime checking out people also. the week before the air show they had some barricades across the road right past the BLC. there were 3 cops behind them so i decided to ride my bike over and ask what the deal was. I was thinking maybe they were going to move the entrance gate to NAS to a new spot or something. I politely asked if the closure was to be permanent because I usually fish and ride in the area. The officer seemed a little annoyed that I had ridden down there. The second Officer was abit more friendly and told me the barricade was just temperory. A car drove up about then and the first one seemed a little more mad so I left without asking more about the new signs. The barricades are no longer there. The NAS police have definatly increased their presence in the area for the last several months however. guest Carlton |

| Went back this AM to check sign. It reads WARNING -Restricted Area Keep Out- Authorized Personnel Only- Authorized entry constitutes consent to search personnel and property under their control; Internal Security Act of 1950 - section 21:50 USC 797. This sign is at the Baptist Learning Center so technically you are not allowed to enter past the signs. This could be used to shut down fishing at the OSO bridge tho apparently they will allow fishing but frown on any other usage. Kinda sucks IMO. |

| Forwarded a link to this board & subject to Mike Baird and David Sikes at the Caller-Times this morning, then ran into David and spoke with him about the situation at Bay Day. Makes you wonder what would happen if the guards tried to interfere with someone legally fishing, in violation of state law. 'Course, if the Navy wants to restrict access to its own surface lands, that's legal, but let it try to interfere with wade or boat fishermen and the burden to show such interference is legitimate shifts. There's also a question as to the ownership of the lands immediately adjacent to Ocean Drive, where most of the parking takes place; might be Navy, City, TxDOT, and/or TGLO property. |

Go to the state land office in corpus and check the plot maps and see who owns what. _________________ Fishing and Kayaking its a rough life but somebody has to do it.

| Hey Maxwell I went out there this morning and took a look at the sign and you are correct as to the terminology on it. I stand corrected on that. Thanks to Mr. French for your involvement in this matter. We all need to keep this matter on the burner until it's resolved. I'd would hate to lose access to the area. Carlton |

| from what i understand all land from just passed oso pier is owned by the navy and TAMU-CC is on land leased from the navy that is why they can close the roads and put the signs there |

I was told by a Navy cop that you are more than welcome to go there and fish as there is no real threat posed by someone out wadefishing. Why somebody would feel that watching fireworks with your family poses some sort of threat i dont know, but then again i dont really know where the navy cops come up with half of their rules, i think alot of it just depends on how big of a power trip whoever approaches you is on, i have also heard that there is alot of problems with kids parking over there and getting high, then finding out they have to go to federal court when they get busted. _________________ save our beach |

What do they expect with all those college students right there?
Remember driving by one time, and there was a group of students out on the new jetties smoking a huge bright red bong, right next to the "Keep Off rocks" sign in broad daylight! Laughed My Arse Off!!! _________________ Give a man a fish, feed him for a day.
