Hit the end of Zahn yesterday around 4:00pm and saw a sight for sore eyes. A massive group of gulls working bait just over the first bar on the surf side of NPJ. I have never seen a group of gulls working so tight for so long. Anyway, all I have with me was my 8'6" steelhead rod with a magged Abu 5600 and some dead shrimp, so I pull my waders on and get out onto the bar. I put three shrimp right under the birds but after about 45 minutes with no bite and some cold water down the waders, I gave it up. Those birds were still working as the sun went down. The only thing I can think of is that there was a school of Bluefish balling up bait. I heard from a couple of guys that these birds have been there for a few days doing the same thing. Working a tight ball just over the bar and drifting from the rocks to about 50 yards north and back to the rocks. I'm thinking some fresh mullet and steel leader may do the trick. Hope they are still there this evening.
later,
Ernie
P.S. The water was pretty murky but calming slowly. If it clears a bit, silver Kastmasters or a Spooner may do it. |

have fished the same scenario from the jetty back in november caught nothing on live mullet but threw out some cut mullet and caught a 4foot black tip on an ugly stick light rod and okuma light action reel wit 20 pound power pro was a blast, it did appear that there were some very large bait fish in the water i assumed large mullet but very well coulda been blue runner _________________ save our beach |

Fished the rocks from 2:00pm till around 2:15pm..LOL. Fogbank from hell blowing in. Don't know if the birds were there or not cause of the 20' vis.
Anyway, I got skunked but a snowbird fishing next to me got one dink whiting. But, as always, there was a nice fire and good buds for the evening.

Tarzan,
I've always enjoyed your reports ....What a "let down" it was for you today!
It's why I daydream about dynamite! (if it were only legal.....I figure its more effective than a `1/2 ounce silver spoon!). _________________ "I just got a new fly-fishing rod and reel for my wife. It was the best trade I've ever made!" |

Crab_n_fisher,
Thanks. Hey, anytime I can be in the water is a good time. Funny you should mention a silver spoon because a few months ago, all my tackle was stolen out of the back of my truck and yesterday I went and bought my first new lure. Yep, a silver spoon. Anyway, I just got back into Corpus from the Island and it is pretty thick out there this morning.
And, the brown pelicans have started to take over the rocks on the north jetty, which is very nice since those sorry S.O.B.'s pulled out their perches that used to be called the surf pier.
