Has anyone had any problems with an Abu Garcia and the levelwind sticking on one side? I have a 5500 (which I have used on the beach) and the levelwind sticks on the left side which causes the line to bunch up.
Actually this has also happened to my Penn no. 9, but I always thought it was just because the reel was so old.
I have tried oil and tightening the levelwind, but nothing has worked. The reel is only about 5 years old and has been kept in good shape (other than this problem).
Any ideas how to fix it?

I agree you pawl is probably worn out. On some reels there is a cap on the side, if you unscrew it a new pawl is inside, atleast I think my 209 was like that. I also remember reading somewhere that levelwinds were better for trolling than using for surf fishing.

The pawl is at the face of the reel, it works with the worm shaft assembly
to guide the line on the reel. There is a cap that covers it. Very simple to replace.

When I have that problem I replace both the gear and pawl. Things do wear out.

Check the worm gear first. Many times crud builds up as it is pushed against the end of the worm gear by the pawl. It can build up to the point where it wont allow the pawl to make it to the end of the worm gear preventing it from turning, engaging and returning the other way. A good cleaning may take care of it. If you let it go too long then you will need to replace the worm gear and the pawl. Brass showing or rounded off edges on the worm indicate it needs to be replaced.

Actually the reel is older than I thought. I think the reel is around 10-12 years old, so they probably do need to be replaced. Where could I find these parts? Academy?
Thanks.

I have more luck with Roy's on something like that. They usually know a bit more about "how to".

I would definitely take off the levelwind if I only used it for surf fishing, but I use this rig for casting lures (freshwater & salt). I would think that guiding the line on with your finger would get old when you are casting all day. I caught these Friday with my dad before the reel finally became too much of a hassle.

LOL, nice catch. No wonder it wore out. Change the pawl and worm.

I took the entire reel apart and cleaned it up (especially the pawl & worm gear). It took about three trys to put it back together again Embarassed , but it is now in perfect working condition. I still ordered a new pawl and worm gear for the next time it acts up. Thanks for the advice!
