Ok, I'm planning a wade fishing trip in mid March around the Upper Laguna Madre and I wanted some input. What lures and colors work best this time of year for big trout?
Thanks in advance _________________ Life is Short....... Fish Hard! |

I personally like to use the rapala skitterwalks, in bone color, chrome and chartreuse, or chrome and pink. If its to windy for top waters, the DOA CAL paddle tail electric chicken is a great choice. _________________ Conservation Is Key |

With the cooler water temps you cant wrong with a slow-sinker corky lure worked super slow for trout. As far as colors it depends on the conditions.
Off colored water & cloudy days go with dark natural colors. Black, brown, dark red ect. In clear water & sunny days bright colors with /glitter flakes, plus spoons ect do better.....Just what Ive read on that topic. _________________ Fish hard, fish the Bluff. Surrounded by water!

Big bait, bit trout! I prefer large topwater baits, color can play a role but not as important as size when fishing for trophy trout. Bone, black/silver, pink, etc. Targeting the right areas is critical and covering every inch of water if you feel you are in a good spot to give up a big girl. Cloud cover and low light conditions will work best for the topwater bite.

Don't forget about old favorites such as the Redfin Broken Back. The state record for many years was a 13 plus lb trout out of Baffin on a Broken Back. I have caught a 12 plus Lb spec on a Blue and Chrome Broken Back as well as several specs in the 25 to 29" range on a variety of Broken Backs. If the water is cold, work them just fast enough to keep them under water with an occasional pause. Also, no box is complete without bone color top dogs, pups, etc. However on cloudy days (quite a few can happen in March) I prefer a darker color if working deeper water of say 30" or deeper. _________________ Big Ed

Be prepared to used something you can cast and work over and over and over again when targeting big spring trout.
That's why big croaker work so well - few have the skill and patience to fish for big trout. Just chuck it out there and wait for the fish to find it.
I like Catch 2000 Mirrolures and Rapala Skitterwalks and B & L Corky Devil. I can throw them into the wind (yep it's windy in Feb and March) and cover a lot of area.
Colors depend on water clarity and sunlight. _________________ Ahh sand between my toes! |

limetruse exude RT slug and a pink skitterwalk while wadefishing. Throw the topwater early and go to the plastic and slow down if the bite slows on top. You can't go wrong with a shrimptail under a mauler sometimes either. My all time favorite confidence bait is a red/ white paddletail. Chunk it out far and reel it in. Twitch it a few times and alter your retrieve speed. Color of baits is a factor but most of the time the confidence you have in a bait will get you more strikes. _________________ J.D |
