I don't know, but you should of kept them alive, you probably found a new kind of fish. You could of been rich!

I know its disapointing but I have no pics with me now, I know everyone has caught one before I always catch them they look like texas lake perch but they have horizontal strpies that are yellow and blue. I usually catch them around 4-5in but I caught 2 11inchers that day. Maybe they were the only to like it on the whole ocean. Laughing

I'm interested in this because a few years ago I caught a bunch of fish I could not identify out in the surf that looked like the bastard children of a redfish and a sheephead, but very colorful, and they all went in the 20" + range. I wish I had my camera with me, because it would have confounded everyone. I got lots of suggestions, but nothing was an exact fit. I have never seen those fish again. Just that one day, by myself out on PINS.

Another interesting catch was something my brother-n-law caught a couple years back we called a diablo fish, which looked like a mix between a sea robin and a grouper with bright yellow fins. Really weird. If I can find the photos, I'll post them. Ugly, ugly fish.

There are lots of fish still unidentified out there, so you never know if you might discover a new breed.

Here's a couple possibilities of identified fish, let me know if there is a match:
Mutton snapper:

Pinfish:

Me and the wife caught several little yellow stripped fish that match that description from Horace Caldwell. No idea what they were, thought at first they were a grunt of some sort but they made no noise. Let em go but still have no idea what they were.

I bet they are piggy perch, the last time I was down there and fished Pachery Channel bridge I saw a huge one caught. I use to have them in my native tank at the house until my toad fish got hungry LOL!!!!

PINfish normally don't go longer than 8", but that doesn't mean they don't. One at 11 or 12" long might make a state record!

I have caught pin perch large enough to fillet and fry up. Some were pushing 10". They fight hard. When you said horizontal stripes, it make me think they were mangrove snapper.
