What's the Best Fishbite Color & Flavor for Catching Pompano?
I'm hitting the beach Monday thru Wednesday and want to know I've got the right bait.
Any Pomp reports? |

Use a small No.1 to 1/0 circle hook. Push piece of peeled fresh shrimp up on shank and "lock" it in place with Pink Crab FishBite.
That's what works for me! _________________ Ahh sand between my toes! |

| Are you using a whole fishbite or cutting it in half? |

Dink, other than the preference of the fisherman, it may not matter much what color to use. We've caught an abundance of pomps on Fishn' Strips so old the original color wasn't detectable. Since pomps eat clams and crustaceans, crab, clam and shrimp flavors all work. The small size of strip right out of the package is what we normally use, but you can buy the big rectangular sheets and custom cut them any way you like. Flakman's order of insertion will work the first time you bait up, but, since the strips last far longer on the hook than the chunk of shrimp, you'll have to rebait with shrimp on the tip and shove the strip up on the shank to make room for it, anyway. I always start by sticking the hook point twice through the broad end of the polygon, and sliding it as close to the eye as possible, leaving the narrow end to wave in the current and giving enough space on the barb end of the hook to hold either a small peeled whole shrimp or a chunk of a larger peeled one. The hooks we use are thin wire circle hooks; the package I'm looking at says: L197G, 2/0 SEAGUARD, Saltwater, Eagle Claw, Lazer Sharp.
Be aware that the strips come in warm water and cold water formulations. If you use the cold water ones when the water is still warm, they'll dissolve too fast, and if you use the warm water ones when the water is cold they won't deliver their scent as readily as they were designed to do. As to when you should switch during the seasons, I can't say, but if the strips seem to be disappearing awfully fast, it may be that you should be using the warm water variety.

Thanks to all who replied...
Johnny - Thanks for the advice. I've read many of your pomp reports and appreciate your honesty and ddetail. I look forward to putting this new knowledge to work this week.
Thanks,

Same here Johhny! It seems you are the pomp expert on PINS. Thanks for sharing.
Last year, I caught a couple of pomps, brought them home and cooked them.
It wasn't hard to convince my wife I needed to head to PINS during pomp season. Will be there in a couple of weeks. |

When I rebait I just take off the FishBite push the hook thru another piece of peeled shrimp and rehook the FishBite. The FishBite really helps to keep the shrimp on the hook.
The hooks I use are No. 1 Mustad #C71S SS, Chemically Sharpened, Forged, 2X Strong, 1X Long, Straight Eye, Stainless Steel hooks. These hooks are used mainly for fly fishmen. The long shank is where I push the shrimp up and then I double hook the FishBite below the shrimp. The barb is small and easy to push back thru the FishBite.
I use these hooks only on my multiple drop rigs. I have caught big biug drum and bull reds with out any problem. My drops are 50# test and my main line is 80# test. I use a loop knot to tie off the hook with rice beads trapped in the loop.
I think the main thing is the FishBite w/o it you just do not keep a bait out very long!

Do you think Pomps would make good sashimi? Or do they eat too much junk from the sand?
Would it be safe? I have had bluefish sashimi so there isn't much I won't try.
Just curious if there are any explorers out there that are as curious as me? _________________ -Skip |
