| I have a buddy that has a 1997 F150 / 4WD and when he engaged the 4wd on PINS this past weekend the light came on like it was engaged but it would not engage at all. Any ideas on what to check before taking it in for (probably an expensive) trip to the dealer or any thoughts on a trusting mech. that is familiar with the f150's ? Thanks for any help given. |

| Is it electronic, push button 4x4, if so it could be the shift solenoid or loose harness plug at the transfer case, not up on that model Ford, but think it uses the same as Gm, the later models have a vaccumn controled diff lock on the frt differential that engages the frt axles, with a electronic clutch in the transfer case, I'd check for loose wires and if it has the vaccumn deal on the frt diff, check the vaccumn hose, maybe someone else has more experience with that model. If your buddy lives in Corpus, a good honest place to take it is Ace Transmissions on Holly and Ayers. They won't fix whats not broke and if it's not the trans, they will tell you so and not charge for roadtesting. Allen |

Try the fuse. There should be one in the fuse box marked 4x4 or 4 wheel drive. If not there is a engage thingy that allows it to be in 4 wheel drive. That goes out some times. _________________ Live to fish.Fish to live! |

I have a similiar problem with a 98 Expedition.
I can get it to lock in 4wd low, but 4wd high can cause problems. Most of the time I can go to low, then back to high, and it will engage.
It seems to be an electronic thing.
Our first problem, FORD (j/k).
Let us know what you find out. |

Ditto what surfmaster said.
1. Buy a Jeep. Enough said. Like a Timex, takes a licking and keeps on tickin.
2. Buy a Chevy. Solid like a rock. Goes great with baseball and home made apple pies.
3. Buy a Dodge (they still have solid axles in the front).
4. Look at the first post if you are still looking at a FoundOnRoadsideDead.

| Check and see if the axle is turning could be as simple as an lock out hub. Just one hub not working will make it not pull. |

Hey CC,
Go to the f150online.com site and search the message forum there! This is a great Ford site and I have read of this problem on the site. It is a electrical motor that engages the thing that can stick when not used regularly and they describe a fix!!! _________________ Craig Harris

If its Push Button, check the harness going to the actuator motor on the transfer case. most likely the prob. Test the actuator or replace.

| I had the same problem with my '99 chevy. Actuator went out, and the computer. $800 bucks later...good as new! |

| If you have automatic locking hubs I would check to be sure the are locking in. if your seeing the engaged light come that is the indication that the transfer case is locked in if your front drive shaft is turning and your front wheels are not its your auto hubs not working. |
