Is Dolphin Docks a good party boat, the one in PI ? I noticed the boat was a big one, it's not too slow is it? Do they have 12 hr trips and will they allow an ice chest and my own gear?
Is it quicker to get to fishing holes offshore down there versus Port A?
And is there any way to reach the south jetties at Port Mansfield without a 4x4? Or where are good bank fishing places around PI, I've never fished there before. I've always fishing PA.
Sorry for so many questions but I need to decide in the next week where I'm going. I'll be there from July 21st - 24th if anyone needs an offshore partner or just wants to take me and the wife out for a while. Or wants to night fish off bank with me for a while. |

Hey BigCat...
I'll try to comment on some of your questions....particularly the ones about party boats.
To answer the question "Is Dolphin D a good party boat?" ... my answer would be yes it is. I find Dolphin Docks a good place to fish. However, in reading here over the past year or two I think it is a personal preference thing. I've fished with DD many times over the years and always had a good time and caught fish. However. for the past 5-6 years I have been fishing exclusively with Deep Sea Headquarters. Why? Consistency. I like the people better because the seem to be friendlier and more genuinely concerned about things. I just like them better and have had some awesome trips. Again, it's a personal thing and you have to develop those feelings for yourself.
The big boat is the 'La Pesca' and although I've fished on the 'Dolphin' and the 'Dolphin Express' many times I have never fished on the
'La Pesca'.
Neither Dolphin Docks or Deep Sea headquarters allows an ice chest on anything but the multi-day trips. I've never understood why that was an issue. Sodas are $1 and beer is $2. Not a problem. Both will usually let you take sandwiches, etc., stowed away in your ditty bag.
By all means, take your own gear. Make sure it it something that is capable. Usually something with 200 yards of 40# test minimum.
Down south, the fishing is closer in but I am not qualified to say that the catching is as good.
Hope this helps. |

It helps a little. I was hoping to bring my own bait is why I want to take an ice chest. I want good bait, whole whiting, mullet, sand trout etc.
not squid....
Any other party boats down in P Isabel besides DD's? |

BigCat...
I've used Whiting, Sand Trout and Mullet (and Croaker) out there several times and not done any better than I do with the Spanish Sardines the boat furnishes. There are some captains that chop their sardines in half to make them go farther. I really can't tell that makes any difference either. If you want whole sardines ask the deckhand to see if he'll get you some but like I said I don't really think it makes that much difference. I fish these boats 20 - 25 times a year and haven't used squid in years. I sometimes catch large Menhaden, freeze them in gallon size ziploc bags and take them with me. They will let you put the sack on ice in their cooler til you start fishing.
Try to catch a Bonito and have the deckhand chunk it up for you. Great bait too.
The bait DSH and DD provide is always good bait.
I never fish Port Isabel. If DD has a boat there I'm not aware of it. |

Are you thinking of The Osprey based in Port Isabel? Anyway, I would recommend going onto the island and using Captain Murphy's for a 12 hour trip out of South Padre Island. The last time I went they did allow small ice chests and you could bring your own gear.

Yes, I think you will usually have more fishing time out Port Isabel/SPI.

It's like PINS, sometimes you can and sometimes you can't in a 2WD truck. You can bank fish the SPI jetty into the channel before the rocks start. Also at the swing bridge in Port Isabel. And wading the bay right before you enter Port Isabel. You could stop at one of the bait stands in PI along the bridge and ask for some recommendations.

| I've been fishing with Dolphin Docks twice this spring out of Port A. First time got cut short by bad weather and we got a rain check. I was treated well both time by DD and would recommend them. They did everything they could to put us on fish and make it a good time. |
