Going from Portland to Corpus Christi, I noticed a boat launch just out of Portland. I have seen some trucks and trailers there.
A person told me you have to be careful there and watch the tides before launching.
Launching is not a problem for me, but I am wondering about the water (depth, reefs, etc.) once you get out of the launch area. I would like to fish the shoreline along Portland over there, but I have not tried due to ignorance and the possibility of boat and motor repair.
Is it even a possiblity to reach that shoreline?
Thanks for your help. |

I lived in Portland for some time and had a neighbor that used to regularly fish that area. He fished the shoreline from the area where the apartments are back into the area called East White Point and always caught fish and was usually home by noon.
Although I had many chances to go with him I never did, regretfully, for if I had I could tell you the heading he used to get there.
I do recall him saying if you take it slow and pay full attention it's not tremendously difficult. Bite the bullet and try it, it may open up a whole new avenue for you. |

I have launched there several times. It is okay not that bad. You launch your boat into about 18-24" of water and then you have to go south around the island there till you get into the deeper water in the bay. It is all soft mud there so it wont hurt anything. If you try to go north right out of the ramp you will hit about 6" of water. I have seen some pretty good size boats launch there so dont be scared. I am much more scared of the oyster reefs out there than launching at that ramp. Once you launch and get loaded punch it and get it on top then throttle back just enough to keep it up and go. Plenty of water there. Be careful a couple of trucks have been broken into there so dont keep anything of value in the truck.
You can reach the Portland shoreline from that side. There are some awesome reefs out there. You just have to look for the difference in the water when it reaches a reef. A lot of people run sail lines out there so watch for them. When we learned that area we just took it slow and tried to pay attention really well until we learned it. Back toward the rv park in the back of Portland there is a really nice reef that holds some big schools of Redfish and Trout. There are plenty of markers out there to help you keep away from hitting the reefs. PM me if you need more info and specifics. |
