Hello all. I moved down here last month and I am trying to get back into fishing. I have been reading on here a lot trying to figure out the whole surf fishing. I am a fresh water fisher by trade, raised in Minnesota. I am in the Marines and work on the NAS. How is the fishing there? Where is the best place to fish at on base or anywhere that my boys will catch some fish and not be bored? Thanks ahead of time and thanks for a great website.

Wow that's a loaded question. There are tons of good places to fish here, but it is fishing not catching on any given day.

I don't know about fishing from the base, but I do know about the surf.

Generally, your boys will be happy, if their young, catching whiting, which have returned to the surf, and can be caught fairly easily in the wade and first guts in the surf using fishbites on a 3-0 or 4-0 hook. These will give your boys lots of action, and the larger ones are great deep fried in a little corn meal like catfish, just make sure to use them fresh, beacuse frozen whiting meat turns to mush.

For you, fish the first and second guts just like you would for bass, and you can catch reds, peckled trout, spainish mackeral, skipjacks, jack crevalles, and numerous other fish. Until the sargassum starts clearing at the end of this month (hopefully), fish the top and mid levels with weedless spoons or jigs. I would suggest using no less than 17lb test line out there, and a good 30 or 40 lb shock leader shot of 3 feet or so. I didn't do that on my last outing and lost two jack crevales and a tarpon. The shock leader is a must.

Once the weeds clear up, you can set up poles in pole holders on the sand thrown into the first and second guts with dead shrimp and fishbites, and to catch reds and pompano, while you toss the lure with another rod.

The best thing about surf fishing is you never know what you are going to catch. To learn more, join the SFCCI (check out the links page on this site) and go to the get togethers and come fish with us and learn. These guys and the guys on this board have helped me learn alot over the years.

Tight lines and welcome to Corpus!

The little Pier by the marina is closed for some reason. The one question is how old are your boys that will determine where and for what they can fish.

I used to fish concrete pier under the lights at night. Never really caught much. Mostly ribbon fish. But there was always a lot of people out there fishing so they must have been catching something. Very Happy Havent been able to get back out there now that the base is running scared. Sad

Thanks for all the great info. My boys are 10, 8 and 4. I am going to go down to Oso bay right now. My neighbor has been catching bass there the last couple days.

Welcome to the board and south Texas. I hate to say this but after a while you will want to stay. I know a girl from Iowa that came to visit her brother and never left. Her being my wife has nothing to do with it I am sure. LOL Porkchop I have an Idea for you. I will take you and your three boys down the Island if you would like. My truck is big enough to hold every one. That includes both wives. Think about it and let me know

Saltydog, I will take you up on that offer. PM me and I will get you my number. I appreciate that.

The rubber raft sounds like a great idea! We have plenty of life jackets for all of us, my wife doesn't fish though, so that is no problem.

As for the bass, I caught two small ones with the cast net. They are large mouth bass, I didn't believe it myself at first until I saw it with my own eyes. It isn't in the bay itself but right behind barnes elm school in the estuaries there. It is brackish water. I am going to take my camera the next time I go which will be wednesday. Hopefully I catch a bigger one.
