I just bought one of these on ebay. Does anbody have any experience with these? I have read alot of good things about them from Calif. anglers. They say they cast real far and are low maintenance. Any comments, crticism, suggestions would be appreciated. I plan on spooling it with 300 yds of trilene big game 15 lb. on a 7.5' rod to use off the kayak in the gulf. I may swap it on occasion to a 10' surf rod for off the beach.

All I know is what I've read as well, George. Freespools forever and low maintenance (crank down the drag, soak in fresh water, loosen drag, store) seem the key attributes

They can be a little pricey but the older ones sure hold their value. I've considered a 229 or 322 if the price is right. Seen one guy (don't remember who it was) on HI with a 229 and he said he loves it. Let us know how it works out.

I have owned Newells since 84'. I still have a P454 I bought brand new for 100.00. It still works fine but am going to retire it soon.

They are a great reel if you are not planning on catching large sharks or rays.

They are very popular among the Galveston Pier gang where they catch big jacks, reds, and sharks up to 6'.
