We put the live ones on ice then deal with them when there are in a state of suspended animation for cleaning the gunk off of them. We have also let them sit overnight on top of the ice but not sitting in water. We boil them whole. Others like to clean them first then cook them.
Speaking of crab, we just had some for dinner. If you are wanting a great deal from some very nice folks go to the Boat Hole Marina and get your crabs there. The nice lady was very helpful and even threw in some extra crabs which she said would not have very much meat in them as they had recently molted. She was right. They sell the big ones for a buck apiece. Go like you are headed to the NAS over in Flour Bluff, take a right on Skipper Lane and they are at the end of the road.

Yes, keep em on ice till you cook em.
Also the crab man in the Bluff (spid next to ace hardware) has them. Last time I got them they were $10 a doz there.
