| I have been fishing PINS for about 5 years(I'm the cute one in the yellow bikini and red cap w/matching surf rod). I wondered if many people cut off the tails of the stingray. I have forgotten to shuffle and stepped on 3 stingrays so far that just sguiggle out from under my feet. Scared me to death, have i just been lucky so far? |

| I think in the past when people were ignorant about keeping the eco system healthy that many did cut off the tails. Now I think the intelligent people don't and the ignorant ones still do. When you release a shark do you pull all of its teeth? You catch a stray dog in your yard do you pull its teeth? |

Cutting the tail off and breaking off the barb are two totally different things.
Some people whack off the entire tail of the stingray, thinking the whip part of the tail is what gets you. Sometimes they dont even take the barb of with it, which is pointless.
I am against cutting off the whole tail, but just removing the barb wont hurt the stingray. It will grow back.
Some people also just toss them up on the beach....  |

The 'winking' smiley was meant to be a 'frowning' smiley...
I'm against tossing them up on the beach. Not only is it a waste of a fish, but it is hazardous to bare footed walkers and tires.  |

I have to think you were lucky for t he most part. Stingrays only use the barb to defend themselves, and are otherwise very docile. It is very likely you didn't step on them hard enough to hurt them, just disturbed them instead.
You may have also step on a flounder or a manta ray, neither of which would sting you, but would still feel slimy under foot.
Be careful, and shuffle those feet.

I guess I have to start surf fishing since there's a "cute" mermaid out there. Hehehe.
"mermaid," sounds like you've been EXTREMELY lucky if you believe that you stepped on stingrays! Man, I get the spooks when ever
Cutting off the tails don't make sense to me. Just personal feeling. I understand what's right for one person isn't necessarily right for another and I won't judge anyone on this since this topic can be controversial. The tail w/ the barbs (usually two) is the stingray's defense mechanism. Otherwise, stingrays would be like flounders. Hehehe. It's their waters, just like shark's waters. So. let's just shuffle and dance our way to catching the Prize Catch.

I am with you on that. If I were out there with the sharks I sure would want to be packing some heat like a nice sharp barb or a big tall spike in the case of a hardhead. |

I agree. Why would you put a wounded fish back into the water? The blood attracts sharks, and without its barb, he has no defense. Might as well have been bait.
When we take something from the ocean, only take what you will use, and return the rest. That is an ecosystem, and even hardheads play an important role - in their case, garbage collector. Return fish you don't want to keep in as good a condition as possible to give them the best chance of survival you can.
