Just got a call that my Brother-in-law was fishing on PINS today and got nailed by a big ray on his calf just above the boot line. Penetrated 1 1/2 inch. Bad stuff.
Be careful out there and wear protection!

Sticks and tears as it pulls loose. Is exceedingly painful and has the potential to cause a nasty infection.
You can protect yourself by wearing stingray guards, moving slowly, sliding feet, and avoiding deep water that may compromise your vision or your balance.

Always do the South Texas Shuffle when wading! (Slide your feet along the bottom when walking, and do so slowly) Stingrays aren't agressive, but only use it as a defense. When you step on them, they react. By sliding your feet, you bump them, and they move along. _________________ Give a man a fish, feed him for a day.

Being hit by a stingray is by far the most painful experience I ever had. It hurt so bad, it was difficult for me to even breathe.
By this time, I had tried everything under the sun that friends and I could think of to remedy the pain.
I ended up at a small hospital with a doctor that was older than dirt. He told the nurse to get a bowl of hot water. He told me as soon as I could stand it, which was not very long considering the agony, to stick my foot in the water and leave it. It almost immediately removed the pain.
I do not recall the medical reasoning he told me, but it had something to do with the hot water reomving the toxicants in my foot.
He told me it would work for jellyfish stings also. |

As a teenager I was a life guard on Rockport beach for 5 years and have seen plenty of stingray wounds.
In the begining I would put an ice pack on the person to try and help them on the way to see the Doc.
Later during a First Aid course I learned that by applying ice I was constricting the blood flow and keeping the poison concentrated in the wound area therefore prolonging the pain.
We where taught to apply heat packs which aids in the flow of blood and spreads out the poison and eventually through the liver to be removed.
So in a nut shell I recommend every one go buy one of those chemical heat packs for first aid kits and throw them in with the mandatory fishing gear. It could possibly make that long trip back to the Doc a lot more bearable. |

Thanks Larry. That's good information to have. I'll pick one up before my next fishing trip for sure. _________________ Give a man a fish, feed him for a day.
