Granted, I'm getting WAAAAAAY ahead of myself here but, what is the best way to transport a big trout to Roy's if I'm about an hour away? Should I put it in the ice chest with ice? No ice? I'm a wader so a live well is out of the question. Don't want her to shrink up any. What say the experts? |

When you catch a fish over 12 lbs., then you can worry about that. But to answer your question, you can convert a large ice chest to a portable livewell to keep it alive until you get to Roy's. Fairly cheap and effective way to keep it alive for the short run. Good Luck. SM _________________ That's why they call it fishin', not catchin' |

| I have heard that wrapping it in a cool moist towel or T-shirt will help preserve the size and weight of the fish. Putting it in ice may shrink it. Not keeping it moist can cause it to lose weight. |

How about a fish bag w/ water in it?
I would bet that there would be many anglers out there who would be glad to transport the monster trout for anyone to a weigh station. Hehehe. _________________ Live To Fish Tomorrow... Fish To Live Today

Better yet just catch a tagged redfish then you wont have to worry about wether or not it shrinks. _________________ Fishing and Kayaking its a rough life but somebody has to do it.

| Well boys, I'll tell you what I did last year. I put that 32 1/2", 10 lb 9 oz beauty in my ice chest filled with crushed ice and then filled it with water. I doubt you could provide enough oxygen in a live well this time of the year with a fish of this size and expect to keep it alive all the way back to Roy's. Meanwhile, the fish is likely to dehydrate in an ice chest covered only in ice. I have always added water to the ice to prevent the fish from dehydrating. That's what a lot of guys do on the Troutmaster Tour. Unfortunately, you can't compete for one year after you win the STAR. I've still got two grandchildren, a son and a son-in-law that I'll be guiding this year. Good luck to all! |

Anyone know how many tagged reds were releashed at what given locations? Im meaning, upper, middle & lower L/M. all equal?
Anyone ever in tourny history ever get a tagged red in the surf?

If I caught a twelve pounder, I'd just strap him to the hood of my truck for the drive to Roy's. He'd definitely shrink, but I bet he'd still win. |

When I caught my 29" Red earlier this year, I kept him on a stringer all morning. I pulled him out of the water and let him ride in my lap when I paddled.
I didn't have any ice in the Igloo when I got back to the truck, so I filled it about 3/4-full with baywater and put him in there for the ride home. It took me about 20 minutes to load everything up and about 45 minutes to drive home. I had some urgent business to take care of before I opened the cooler, so call it another 15 minutes. The fish was still alive by then, but by no means frisky. I don't know if an aerator would have made him last longer or not, but I'm sure it wouldn't have hurt.
So I think that a livewell of some sort will help to transport the fish if you wanna keep it alive. Hope this helps. _________________ Chad Landry
