Everytime I go out to pins with my buddies, I always catch and release. Now I want to take the catches home and make some good meals. What are some of the techniques y'all use to keep the fish fresh until you get home? What will hold the fish for a few days on the beach until I can get it into a freezer at home? I was thinking about buying one of those igloos that advertises "keeping ice for 5 days in 90 degree heat." Do you guys just throw the fish into the ice or do you wrap it is something and then put the fish on ice?
Also, just out of curiosity, what are some of the tastiest fish that are caught on pins?
thank you |

I use block ice on the bottom and use a 20lb bag for the top, keeping the ice in the bag. I also try to keep them out of the water (drain it) as the ice melts.
This has worked for me.

If you are going to be out there for several days the fish should be good as long as you have ice. Keep your ice chest out of the sun helps a lot with the ice not melting. _________________ Hardheads should be the state fish of Texas |

That cooler you refer to does keep things cold. I have three and recomend them to everyone.
The only thing I would add is to gut the fish not long after they die.
Have fun

I have an Igloo too. If you throw only one 20lb bag of Ice in it, it will have some cubes still after 3 days, so I imagine if filled up (three or 4 bags) you should be okay. They work very well.
Keep it in the shade, and consider digging a pit in the sand to keep it in. That will help insulate it. The sun is the biggest enemy of keeping ice on the beach, the wind blowing across your cooler is the second.
Many of the guys use block ice for at least half of the cooler, others stop at sonic and get that crushed ice, and pack it in thick. _________________ Give a man a fish, feed him for a day.

| Thank you for all the helpful techniques. I think I will buy two of these igloos before I head out to pins next week! Thank you again. |

Put layer of block on base of one cooler. Place plastic wrap on top of ice and put down a layer of dry ice. Leave the plug out.
Transfer block ice to other coolers as needed. Youi can keep ice off several days. _________________ Ahh sand between my toes! |
