Top pic is of a 3 oz slideline clip using #10 or #11 Malin wire.

Middle pic is of a Tarpon/Kingfish leader which consists of a 5/0 or 6/0 live bait hook, 1 1/2' - 2' of #9 Malin wire, and 3'-5' of 200Lb test mono with a 1 or 2 oz egg sinker on the 200LB mono.

Bottom pic is how the leader is attached to the clip (also main line).
Once a fish strikes the leader snaps off the clip, the clip slides down the anchor line and you are fishing.

Hope this has helped some.

Fred.

Everything to make the clips and leader can be purchased at Academy or Roy's Bait and Tackle.

Here is a couple pics of how we rig on the pier. The longer rods are the anchor rods and the shorter ones are the ones you actually fish with.

8 oz weight with #8 guage wire.

That day my friends and I caught around 30 kings, landed my first jack, and hooked and lost one Tarpon

FS552 I've been following this for a while. As an ol'fresh water fisherman I'm always looking for new and improved ways to rig and fish this salty water. Now for the big question........ Can this method also be used in the surf? Conditions permiting of course. I'm talking about surf in relation to PINS and not from the pier. Trying not to seem too dumb........ Wink
The reason I ask is because we don't kayak.

Rutro,

I've never tried slidelining in the surf, but I don't see why it wouldn't work.
The key is to have a rod long enough to keep the angle on the anchor line as high as possible so that you can place your live bait at the desired location. Another thing you can do is shorten you leader, instead of dangling 5' of leader try 3' and it will slide a little further out since it is shorter.
When wind becomes a problem we use heavier clips (5 oz egg sinkers).
One other thing I forgot to mention is that you want to use at least 50Lb test line as your anchor line, once you have 3 or 4 clips at the end along with the surf weight you will aprreciate not breaking off and losing all your clips and surf weight.

Some of my friends slide for big sow trout off BHP with excellent results.
We plan on sliding on the jetties this year for Tarpon and Kings.

Fred.

Hey thanks for the reply FS552. Just one more question, how long of a long pole do ya'll use for the anchor line? I've got the hankering to make some cane surf rods and have a source for Calcutta cane upto around 20ft. I wouldn't want a 20ft pole though, probably couldn't turn it over

10 ft rod off the pier is fine and will work for the jetties, but not sure about the surf. I would try atleast a 12ft rod though.

I have seen guys at the pier cast out their anchor line and then cut off and tie the end of the line to the tips of 15 foot poles. Your 20ft calcutta rod idea might work the same way.
