Ahhh....that type of fishing is called a sail line. As you saw, there was an orange type sail, a spool of line about 600 yards and 30 hooks, and usually a motor that is used to bring in the line. A TPWD tag is required for every 100 yards at $4 a tag.
I used to sail line when I was a bit younger (now I just build them on the side.) You get to use 30 hooks with bait or lures and basically sail them out to 1,800 feet.
It is only fun if you go with friends that help out. Otherwise I wouldn't recommend doing it by yourself. It's a bit of work. As far as productivity goes....it's just like regular fishing, sometimes they are there....sometimes they are not! (Hint: We used to go to the Portland shoreline where the bill boards are at across from Indian Point Pier......we usually do well out there.....)
On the flip side...you can think of it like this:
A. You get to cover 1,800 feet with 30 hooks baited any way you want
OR
B. Get 15 rods and use double leaders to get 30 hooks.....and hope you can cast up to 600 yards for equal effect!!! (not likely under normal circumstances).
I think it's a very productive method of fishing, where the spoils are divided among friends.
As in all parts of saltwater fishing...from fly fishing, to kayaking, to sharking, to running off shore, all I can say is you need to try it for yourself and see if it's for you.
(I personally still prefer going down to Fish Pass flats or down PINS and take them one on one. You just can't beat sound a screaming drag and feeling the adrenaline rush of a toothy critter having his way with your bait!!! GAME ON!!!) _________________ Fishing: The act of casting, spinning, trolling, jigging, while freezing, sweating, complaining, lieing, and/or cursing. |

| My next door neighbor, name of Fox and long passed away, claimed to have used the first sail line here in Corpus Christi. He said he saw them being used on some lake in Mexico and decided to copy the design, which used an inner tube as a float. At first, the sail lines all used bait, but later most switched to lures. My friend C.H. Givens' father used to carry two in his van and often set one out near TAMUCC. Folks would drive up and watch him catch a few, then wander closer to ask what he'd take for the rig. He'd sell it, and then go get out the other. |
