Was going to fish Yarborough next week in my Majek, and was wondering about the road that cuts over from the beach to Yarborough?? Is it feasible to pull a boat down that road and put in at the small ramp over there with a 4WD?? Just thought some of you guys might have tried it, and some might know what shape the road is in??
Thanks,
Shalor |

I usually put in at Bird Island but I thought this might be a good way to do a combo PINS surf fishing and Yarb. fishing day, plus cut way down on a 20 mile boat trip...but wanted to ask yall's opinion before I try it and get stuck.
Thanks,

| I went out there on sunday 4/24/05, and it was quite bumpy and soft. There were 3 trucks stuck in the pass as I pulled up. I made it through ok, but the run over the dune ridge was pretty rough. It would be a lot of stress on a boat/trailor getting through if the conditions stay the same. I would recommend launching from bird Island. There is so much sargassum in the surf at PINS right now its pretty much unfishable. Your best bet would just to launch at Bird Island, and camp back there and just stick to the bays. Just my 2 cents. Jason Slocum |

| I had the very same thought this past Sunday. Long story short: walked the pass at the dunes and told myself there was no way I was getting a boat through that soft sand, but I gave her hell anyways. As soon as I felt the trailer drag I knew it was over. Got off the gas immediately before I dug in too deep. Unhitched the boat (small scooter) and with the help of some fellows got it moved out of the way back towards the beach. The truck popped right out after that. Had no problem gunning through the soft stuff to get back in there without a boat, but the boat trailer is just one huge anchor in that sand. Saw a couple of others get stuck at the dune line. Hint: If your going for it then GO FOR IT!!! There's no lollipopping trying to cross the first dunes. Took the rig back to BIB and launched an hour later. No harm, No foul. I was lucky this time. Thanks to the four guys that helped me get the boat off the truck and back towards the beach. |

| Wish us luck cause were probably going to give it a go this weekend. If you happen to see a black and a blue Z71 going down the beach this weekend with a boat behind one of them go ahead and laugh cause were probably going to get stuck, but wait about a hour and then head down to yarbrough and see if we need some help. I sure would appreciate it. Anyways, it won't be the first time we have been stuck there. |

| Guys, the Yarborough Pass dune crossing is the site of one of PINS' few human fatalities. A woman by-stander was killed when someone tried to used a boat winch to retrieve a boat and trailer stuck in the sand. She was standing within range of the winch cable's recoil when it snapped. I know gas is expensive and it's a long way from Bird Island, but why not wait until conditions in the dune crossing improve? |

Many people over many years have used the dunes to access launching at Yarborough. Conditions are a factor, but with right equipment and a little smarts, you will do fine.
Your Z71 is a good vehicle for the job due to its lightness and somewhat of a lift. You would do well to secure the boat to the trailer perhaps even running an extra rope around her.
Upon arriving at Pass, exit vehicle and look for obstructions, conditions, etc. Next, pick up some speed on the good ground. After that, head for the pass and DO NOT stop for nothing save human life. This time of year without much rain always proves challenging.
It is a good idea to keep as much fishing equipment, gear, electronics, etc. in the cab of the truck with you while traveling in the powder. It will save you a whole lot of cleaning, maint., and upkeep cost.
By the way, when you exit pass - samething, but it is good to have someone walk ahead of you to aid in safety to others and self.
Look at it this way, it is all an adventure. If you get stuck; it's not the end of the world. I would rather be stuck in the Y than lost motor with no radio in the Gulf.
Good luck and let us know! |

| First off I would like to thank all you for your concerns, but this is not the first time we have tried to pull a boat through yarbrough. Sometimes we make it through just fine and sometimes we spend a few hours digging ourselves out and crawling throught the cut. The hardest part about making it through the cut is going up into it. Other than that we usually never have a problem making it out of the cut with the momentum we carry from the boat and the truck going down the dune. But I thank all you for your concerns and we will be extremly careful when going through the cut. We never attempt this if we don't have an extra truck and I wouldn't suugest it. With the extra truck you can send it through first, usually with no problem, and then wait for your buddy to come through stopping any traffic trying to go out of the cut. Plus if they do get stuck you can back up and pull them out with with a good set of tow ropes. Which if you spend any time on PINS you have realized that they were well worth the money. |

| Good luck to you and post up to let us know how it turned out for you. I, too, have launched out of the Y several times, but this last Sunday wasn't even close. That ol dry sand was like trying to drag a trailer in two foot of pure, dry sugar. The little trailer tires plowed pretty bad and the axle hung immediately. There were 1 foot and better ruts all the way through. What little common sense and fear I've developed over the years finally kicked in and told me that it was not to be this day. There's no telling how much money and heartache I saved by heading back to BIB. A good rain down there might make for better passage. |

Why wouldnt you want to put in at Bird Island and not risk anything? What do you save (or pay) by trying that at YB with a boat that size?

| A boat that size? We were taking in a ten foot Mowdy scooter with a 25 horse. I have launched my 13 foot scooter with a 50 from Y also. I run my Majek out of BIB. Launching the scooters out of Y is darn handy when it can be done. |
