The time has come to purchase my first boat and I am beginning to do my research. Thought I should ask around and get some input from others. So please feel free to throw your two cents in...

What I need/want is a saltwater boat to use mainly for saltwater fishing and some offshore and bay rec. activities with the wife and son. I want something thats not too huge, but definately big enough to go offshore. At the same time, I want it to be small enough to fish the bays and some shallower waters 2-3 foot. Im looking for something in the price range of 35k.

What do you all recommend(size, type, manufacturer)? I look forward to all your feedback.

That's a tough one. What I find is that it is similar to the old "Let's find a bass fishing boat that would be good for water skiiing too" It ends up that it is not really great for either. To me, a boat that would be comfortable for the family offshore would be too big to run around in the shallow areas around here and those for the bay would not be worth a damn offshore but that's me. Now if you are just sticking to fishing around Corpus Christi Bay and the ICW that's different. Surfmeister has a boat he uses like that.
Great for taking the kids say over to the Fina Docks or fishing inside the jetty at Port A and offshore on calm days.

Check out this website maverickboats.com, look at the pathfinder line of boats. The 22' pathfinder is a good all around boat for fishing the flats or deep water. A friend of mine has one and has taken it out past the jetties many times (on calm days of course Very Happy

).

I personally own a maverick 21' master angler, but the pathfinder is more family friendly, with the higher sides and more seating. Check out the public forum on thier website for more info.[/url]

I have a 20ft highside Gulfcoast.It was designed off the Boston Whaler Revenge/Outrage hull.It has a nice comfortable dry ride,lots of storage,built in live well and plenty of fishing room.It will run in about six inches and float in twelve.I've been out 40 miles in the gulf.Good luck making your choice.

Getcha something big enough to put a couple of kayaks in. When you're ready to go in the shallows, anchor up the mothership and paddle. You'll love it! If you don't, you'll have no trouble getting most of your money back on the kayaks when you decide to sell them.

I'm planning to rig a kayak rack on my boat so I can get to my favorite kayaking spots quicker. I plan to get a pet alligator to keep on board the boat when it's anchored to scare away would-be thieves.

I think an alligator would be a great deterrent around here, judging by the reactions I see when people see one. Laughing

I don't know about the alligator deterent system. Some of us around here might see a chained up alligator as an easy way to get some nice luggage or a bag for the wife and some good meat for a stew! Laughing

Of course this is from a guy who has an alligator head pen holder. Wink
