Howdy all!

My buddies have gotten me hooked on coast fishing. We are headed to PINS this weekend.
We would love to hook up with someone as I am still a novice and would love some pointers. How to spot the fish, how to rig for different fish. Casting to the 3rd cut is still giving me issues.. Confused
I will be towing down my Toyota 4-WD so I am planning to drive to find the fish.
(If you see a blue Toyota reg cab, short bed with a roof rack, silver tool box and jump seats in the back; stop and say hello!)

Also; what CB channel do most people monitor while on the beach?

So; a big hello from me, and a honk from SandFlea Very Happy

Hey Elvis,

What days are you going down there? I'll be there Sunday through Tues.

I believe most peeps monitor Channel 1 on the CB.

Seabass;

I will be rolling in to the State Park Friday around 3 PM with the 5th wheel. I plan to stay until Tuesday; heading back to Georgetown Tuesday late morning. Fri night I will hit the fish pass, and practice casting (I hope there are not too many surfers.. I would hate to get in their way)

Thanx for the heads up on the CB channel.
If you would like someone tagging along when you hit PINS, PM me and I will pass on more details! Very Happy
I had not planned on sleeping on the beach; but there is a tent and sleeping bag in the 'fiver... What were your plans?

Thanx in advance;
Elvis..

My wife and I are headed down there Thursday. If the surf stays small, we will be down at PINS somewhere. If the surf builds, we will prpoably be around fish pass.

Hey Elvis,

We are heading down on Sunday afternoon, probably getting on the beach around 7:00 p.m. We plan on driving down PINS to around the 40mm to do some shark fishing. Gonna head off the sand on Tuesday. You're welcome to hang out and fish with us. I'll be with my buddy Jay, who has a blue Dodge quad cab 4x4 with rod rack on the front. We'll be bringing a kayak also.

Hi ya'll
I am looking to come over to CC on Friday, buy a drifter (I was relieved of my last one via 5 finger discount from my garage) and hit the water. I have only fished up around Rockport and the flats but the more I see pictures I need to hit the sand!!! I see you guys talking about numbers (at the 35 or the 40) what and where is that? Where do I access the beach to drive down? What do ya'll use for bait? (I have been doing mostly fly fishing till now) Thanks for the help!

Check out this website: http://www.nps.gov/pais/

When you hear people talking about #'s (35 or the 40), it is refering to the mile marker or distance down the beach. There are telephone poles up near the dunes every 10 miles, some have numbers and others do not. The easiest way to track how far down you are is to reset your odometer once you hit the sand in the park.

As far as bait goes, everything from fishbites, shrimp, squid, crabs, mullet, rays, and on up to big baits are used in the surf.

Once the Jacks come in (summer to late fall?) guys will break out the fly rods. Otherwise surf rods and shark rigs are the most common used.

Elvis- I am set up for boondocking with my Lance so if I end up at fish pass, I'll be on the county beach on the north side of the jetties.

Cheers,

tp

Howdy,

Sorry to hear your yak got nabbed. That's never good.

Common baits included shrimp and fishbites for reds, black drum and sheepies, as well as most other fish. You can throw mirrolures or bass asassins for specks and reds, as well as other fish like jacks. Gold and silver spoons work well in the surf for almost anything that will hit a lure. Just cast downwind and dow current from where you are at, and bring the lures back in the retrieve you normally would. If wading in, cast up current of pinches in the guts or washouts and let the lure kind of drift into and through the area. Also, standing on the first sand bar and casting down current along the back side of the sand bar where the clear/dirty water line is is very effective and snatching trout. Just retrieve a gold spoon through that area on a slow to medium retrieve.

Also, work deeper pockets and guts with a silver mirrorlure for spanish mackeral and skip jacks.

Remember to make sure you have good line and properly set your drag, because you never know when a big jack will grab your bait and make a run.

If the wind is down, you can fly fish very successfully out there. Same technique, bigger flies and popping jigs are effective.

Have fun and tight lines!
