Is it possible to catch six sharks on one rod, al at the same time? Read on and find out.
Brandon, Bundy, Rob, Megan and I went down the beach yesterday to try and put some points on the board. We were expecting the wind to turn from the southeast and hoping for the temp to warm up a bit, but neither really happened. We got out there around 12, tried to catch some bait at around the 20, not much happening so we headed down to the 37. Once there, the wind was still pretty cold and the surf was pretty rough. We decided just to cast for bait and maybe a red or two, and we caught a few reds before I decided to brave the cool water and cooler temperatures and finally yak out some baits.
Rob with a nice red:
Brandon got into the action with an oversized red:
I joined them with an small bull red:
With the reds smashing everything that was thrown at them, Brandon checks his 4/0 that I dropped just beyond the third bar as it was going slack without any reason that we could see. He brings it in, and we were all amazed to see two sharks, a finetooth(I think) and a little blacknose(maybe?). Neither were hooked, they were just wrapped up in the leader and both were pretty much dead when they hit the beach.
Bundy with the blacknose(or sharpnose maybe??):
My best guess is that the smaller blacknose hit the whiting and the finetooth came along to snatch up the blacknose, both getting entangled in the leader.
I tried to revive the finetooth for about 20 minutes, no dice so I decided to clean her up. As I leaned over to gut her, her stomach starts moving. I cut into her and out pops four pups, still alive and kicking. We rushed them back into the water and they all seemed to swim off just fine with a little coaching by Megan. One decided that Megan was mom and swam around her for a while before taking off for deeper water.
In all the haste to release the pups, we didn't get any pics of them. Our other baits set out also got mauled, but no hookups.
The bigger shark could have been a blacktip, but honestly I'm just not sure. Any idea as to the ID?
Thats how you catch six sharks all at the same time on one rod.
Anyway, it was a nice cool afternoon on the water.

Excellent attempt at rescue!
Great RFs! Must have been fun for sure.
Did you guys tag and keep the oversized RFs or let it go?
Thanks for the post and conservation efforts! _________________ Live To Fish Tomorrow... Fish To Live Today

Forgot to mention that we took home four slot reds, all oversized released to fight another day. It seemed like the majority of the reds running the guts were oversized, we hooked a few that just wouldn't stop and we lost lots of big ones. They're out there. _________________ Third Coast holds the Most |

Cool report! I bet no noe else can say they caught 6 sharks on one rod and reel at the same time! Great that the pups were able to be released and swam away. Sound like the emergency C-Section on the sand was a success.
Great reds and nice job. You gotta watch for those slack lines. Usually somethings there. Too bad no pics of the pups, but I can understand the rush to get them to the water. _________________ Give a man a fish, feed him for a day.

All the reds were caught on whiting. _________________ Third Coast holds the Most |

| Do you cut the whiting for the reds, or use them whole? Dead, alive? |

Let me re-phrase that, cut whiting. _________________ Third Coast holds the Most |
