Water clear, not too windy, easy driving to the 36. Six pompano to 3 1/2 lbs., about ten times as many whiting (breaking in a new guy, who didn't know to count as he emptied the ice chests). Biggest pomps at north end of Big Shell.

Weirdest thing was when a 9-inch menhaden somehow snagged itself on a tiny circle hook almost filled by a Fishbite. Chopped up Mr. Pogy and put the pieces out over the bar. A 29 1/4" Spanish mackeral ate the head. We had a lot of cut offs today, but only that one hooked up. Finger mullet yielded only skipjacks.

Nice report. Looks like I need to dust off the Pomp rod and get south.
later,
Ernie

P.S. Johnny, will you please tell me where the place you call Coyote pass is?

Has the finger mullet migration started yet or are they still hit and miss in the surf? Last time I was down (mid July) I couldn't find a finger mullet. Thanks.

Coyote Pass is approx MP 33. Small dunes have grown across its beach end now, but it used to run between the extreme southern end of The Hole and the surf. Many years ago, four of us caught 106 flounder out of it on rod & reel right where those dunes are today. There's a small pickup with a campertop buried in it between the dunes and the surf.

Finger mullet are still pretty scattered. Appeared to be a lot near shore north of the 4WD sign at dawn, but they were much harder to find father south after the sun came up. Some are already a little large to use live, but TPWD researchers found redfish love 'em cut in half at that size. There were a lot of pelicans diving near shore, too, but at least some of what they were after appeared to be menhaden, not mullet. Saw very few signs of predator fish working beneath the birds today.

Did you end up going all the way down the beach and come back to fish or did you just end up stopping at the highbanks?

What color fishbites were the pomps hitting on? It would be really nice to get a few of those this weekend.

Oz - We always fish our way south, turn around about 2 p.m., so just began at the first good drop off where casting was easy. In years past, we used to tear the pomps up at the beginning of Little Shell, but the beach is narrower and the guts shallower there now. On the 31st, we got the four largest ones at the first spot, not far from where the big burn begins; the wind still had a little west in it then, and the "burning sugar cane" smell of the old fire was strong.

Tyler - Haven't downloaded from my camera yet, but when I do I'll email the pix of one of the 3-pounders and that Spanish mack. Don't know how to post them on this board.

Curmit - We got the pomps and the whiting on mixtures of green, pink, and white Fishbites, usually with half a peeled shrimp stuck on before each cast for added attraction. Darned if I can tell if the color has anything to do with it. We did pretty well a while back with some old Fishbites that had set in a hot garage so long they were bleached to gray. Shrimp and crab flavor also seem to catch equally well.

Hey JF,
Thanks for the details. Think I'll have to give it a shot sometime this weekend.

Nice report!

Way to go on the pomps

And I always thought they were a winter species?

I caught a couple of them this summer and I had my mind set on a tasty meal with them but Oz stole them from me for bait, LOL.

Nice fish. I found out last week there are schools of pomps in the laguna. I was using a gold spoon and happened to flip it in the water about ten feet from my kayak and 5 pomps came straight up out of the water. I must have startled them. They were not very big maybe 5 or six inches. But they sure surprised me. Very Happy
