Just wanna say hello to all the groovy dudes on the board. Your knowledge sure helps me figure this fishing stuff out. Everytime I go into Wally World (Wal Mart) I see these 6'6" or 7' Ugly Stik rods. I sit there and try to think which one would be best to use for wade fishing or from the bank to catch both trout and redfish. Yeah I know both will land them but one appears to be Medium-Light action and the other a simple Medium (but the tip is sorta flimsy).

Would the strictly medium rod be best? I ask because I want the added strength in case a bigger fish other than what I'm targeting is on my line. Will it still be sensitive enough and give enough sport for even the dinks and rats out there?

Any suggestions? If you dudes have any answers please include the model # or type of Ugly Stik too. It would help me in case I'm looking at the wrong rod when I'm comparing it with the two Wal Mart ones. I hope some on this board use these rods for wade fishing. I certainly can use the help. Thanks.

Can you dig it? These rods have a seven year warranty!!! I'm tripping here! I want one of these babes.

hmmmmm well, it kinda depends how the rod feels to you. the faster tip will make a fast hook set but lacks in power to fight the fish compared to the stronger rod. for wade fishing, id look at those "uglystick lite" rods im sure they have the same warranty as the regular ugly sticks.

in the end it all depends on how it feels to you. make sure to match everything to the rod (line weight, lure weight)

check out the 7'6" ugly stick lite intracoastal i had one and it was awesome. could handle the big reds, but the dinks still felt like a good little rod bender.

am3 is right, if you are going to go ugly stick, get an intercoastal series, just watch the guides, I had two of the little ceramic (I guess they are ceramic) inserts pop out on mine and had to glue them back in

i've got the 7'6 M-L Ugly Stick Lite with an old Ambassadeur 5600 and it works great all around for me... popping corks, topwaters, bass assasins and it wil sling the hell out of a surf weight because of how much u can load the rod on a cast. setting the hook is also nicer with the extra length. which ever one you get make sure its a 1 piece. ive had a few bad experiences with the 2-piece model...thomas

I belive the "traditional" ugly-sticks are mostly fiberglass. They may contain some graphite, but these are made in an old rolling process, (Howald) and the graphite fibers are primarily placed around the diameter, vs. along the rod's legnth. This may be the reason that the old style U-S are very soft and slow in action. These rods are widely considered to be indestructable, and use Fuji guides for spinning, and sharespere guides for casting models. The rods are typically black, and the blank is "unsanded", that is appears to have ridges spiraling up the legnth of the blank. Guide wraps are typically black with yeallow and red pain bands. These rods, in my experience, are less satisfactory in lighter weights, but more servicable in the heavier weights, including boat rod and surf styles.

The newer U-S "Lite" rods are conventional modern graphite material and rod rolling. They appear to be equal to many other rods of the same type and cost.

Great advice. I am in debt to everyone here. Buds (pun intended), I'll see ya on the water. Well, at the water. I can't walk on it quite yet, but sometimes I think I can! Wink I plan on having a good ole time out there fishing with my new rods. I'm going down to Wally World tomorrow and picking up a couple.
