I was thinking of taking my little 12' jon boat down to fish some of the bays around the port a / rockport area. It's rigged up with a small outboard and a trolling motor. Obviously I wouldn't venture too far from land or out in the channel. I just know a lot of good spots for reds that are close and figure it's better than wade fishing. I'm not a kayak guy either.
Any reason why it wouldn't work???? |

Get one of those Top Spot maps of the area showing all the channels and areas you can run your outboard and it will make it a whole lot easier to navigate around. _________________

Just be careful in 2 to 3 foot waves. I ran a 14 footer with a 7.5 hp motor for several years.
The main concern I experienced was turning in the larger waves. If not careful, they will come over back corners of boat.
Also, do not let anyone or too much weight on the front of the boat. One wave over the front and that boat will have more water than you can imagine.
Good luck and be safe. |

Thanks the for the advice. I don't plan on going anywhere near 3' waves.
The reason that I ask is with all the accessible shallow water I thought I would see more jon boats or little 'bass-buster' type boats out there for people who just want to get off the shoreline or piers. I plan on using it where one would normaly wade fish or kayak. I just think (for me) a little jon boat would be more handy than a kayak and definitely more safe than wading. |

When I was a kid, my Dad used to rent us one from Keith's rentals on SPID for $5. It did a great job around in the Laguana area. Perfect for getting up to those spoil islands. He would just cut the engine off and tilt it up and we would slide up on the bank and fish.
Never a problem with getting wet either back in there. It normally pretty calm. Have fun and tight lines. _________________ Give a man a fish, feed him for a day.
