Reel Maintenance:

I know this subject has come up, but I'm curious and wanting to just see numbers versus the how to's and such (I've already seen that posted). I just want to translate into percentages that Do and that Don't. I was informed by a local factory rep. not to rinse because the constant water use will cause more harm - rust to the bearings, etc. This is even with ARBs and the like

Reels
How many people rinse (i.e., no extreme abuse of reels like having gotten sand on it, dunked it in surf/bay, etc.)?
Yes or No

How many people use Corrosion-X or something similar?
Yes or No

What's the average age of your reels?
In years

Thanks!

Yes,
Yes, also be sure to back off of drags.
2 years

By the way Rocky at Roy's says not to wash them or rinse them but to wipe them with a towel moistened with Corrosionx etc. He says the freshwater gets into the reels and screws up the bearings.
I do have to shake out the abus much like a dog shakes its head to get water out of its ears. if I don't the excess water tends to pool on the side of the reel that is facing down on the rack they sit on in the garage. That has indeed rusted a bearing on that side once before.

There is a simlar thread down the page aways.

Yes
No - but I dissassemble them one or two times per year.
5 reel, ranging between 6 months and 5 years old. All cheapies.

I rinse gently from the top with cold water. Never warm as it melts and cleans your grease right out of your reel. High pressure has a similar affect, blasting out the grease. Always from the top so I don't get a reel case full of water (I use spinning reels).

I went to Roy's and asked for the different lubes required for each reel. Rocky will tell you what you need and what you don't and give you some tips to make it easier. Great guy!

Tight lines Mr. C!

I rinse reels after every SW trip, even if kept dry. No high pressure spray. I tighten drag before rinse. Loosen drag after reel drys (1-2 days)

After dry, I wipe down reels with a soft cloth saturated with silicone. I do this every other trip.

I also remove spools on reels after "a few" SW trips, and either soak or extended rise the line. Especially braids which can build up a serious accumilation of salts. I do this perhaps a few times a year.

I use a HW synthetic lubricant between all metal parts, moving or not, special attention between dissimilar metals, due to galvanic factors.

I don't have an average age. I have over thirty reels. perhaps 10 under five years, perhaps 14 5-15 years old, and 6 15-50 years old.

A lot of very knowlegable people don't recommend water rinse. This works for them. However, if you have expensive reels, and don't want to see a grown man cry, use a feather duster or similar tool first to remove sand or you will badly scratch up anadiozed surfaces. There's less reason to be concerned about this issue with boat fishing gear, but if you've spent time on the surf, you know what the wind, sand and wave spray do..

Yes

I use Remington Gun Oil

10 years, Penn 4400s and 4500, one one Penn bait caster

Penn Bait Caster has been pretty good to me, but I will not buy another. After several large drums and reds it always needs repair.

In doing your research, it may be interesting to know how often the reels are in use.

I think that's a good parameter for future all-around survey.

For me, I STOPPED rinsing all of my reels FOR NOW. I want to gauge what others are doing and experiencing.
