GoinCoastal has peaked my interest in PINS. So now I have the typical newby questions. One is there a fee for camping along the beach not in an official camping area? Two where can you get to with 4x2 pickup? Three if I want to catch Rat Red's where do you find them at?

And anything else I should know fell free to add.

If you will spend any time there, just get the annual pass. its an extra $10 if you want to use bird island basin. Tides, driving skill, and a rear locker will determine how far you can go. At low tide you can get way down in 2WD but you may not make it back till the next low tide. You can pretty much camp anywhere, just remember it is very isolated a lot of times and you will be a long way from no where, so prepare accordingly.

you can get anywhere with 2wheel as long as you know how and have the knowledge and experience driving down there. people make it down to the jetties in lincoln and cadillac cars. just 2 or 3 weeks ago a guy had a post of a gold lincoln continental down at the jetties. and that was because he said he had to go to 4 low in one place.

The fact is that on a good low tide (more than a 1' below mean tide level on the chart) you have a good chance of getting down wherever you want to go in 2wd.

This is where the pictures of various cars like LTD's and Cadillacs down PINS come from.

However, this is not always the case. There are the occasional times when the water will create a suckout up to the high road, and there are times when the sargassum or other debris on the beach will prevent you from driving anywhere but in the soft stuff.

Never ever park where you can see water behind you in your tracks or ghost shrimp holes.

Also where you get down to at a low tide, may be more than you can handle on the way back when the tide is up. More than a 1' above mean level and you can count on lots of driving through soft sand.

The beach is a dynamic environment that changes from day to day, sometime quite a lot. So be reasonable and cautious in your judgement on how far down you go.

As far as learning about the surf, check out the links and tips on this site. They are a good place to start. Check out Billy Sandifer's site for what will be biting out there. He has a good chart for targeting different species at different times of the year. The SFCCI site has great tips on everything fishing as well.

Your first time out, you may want to hire a guide like Mr. Sandifer. You will learn what took many of us years to learn in a day or two and have a great time doing it!!!

Most important of all, go out foremost because you want to spend time on the beach and fish second. This way you enjoy the beach even if you come home empty handed, which happens more times than not for me.

Driving low tide in 2WD will work, unless someone has set up a camp next to the water, forcing you to go high, into the softer stuff. My friend Murphy says the odds of this happening, at the worst possible place it could happen, are a virtual certainty.

Be sure to take a shovel, boards/rugs, and tow strap.
