I was prompted to start this thread from an earlier post by saltydog. How often does everyone re-tie their shock leader to the mainline? I feel like I use a good knot but after two days on the surf my knot failed. I was using the knot in the link below. From everyones experiance do you think it was my knot or natural stress

i tied this knot
and didnt have to bother with it after 3-4 trips.
now i have the blob instead on the overhand knot. the blob feels very strong but i have a feeling after a few cast its gonna weakin so ill probly go back to the overhand.
the only thing ive done different is to not run the main line through the overhand knot.
i like the idea of a tapered leader like torpedo posted but its kinda light. |

The Alberto Knot is the last one I used and won. It held up while casting out and draging in seaweed.
Give it a try

I'm kinda partial to the Albright knot. I've watched a few good ole bigguns brought in after some lengthy runs. Nickaway at Breakaway uses this one also, so that sealed the deal for me. The only downside to the knot is applying the moisture to the line prior to pulling the knot tight. Much spit needed. Here's a link with some good knots.....Pebster

I use the knot Mando included in his post with the overhand knot and the uni. It works great.

| Lets see if I can describe how to tie this knot. 1. Overlap main line & shock leader by 6 to 8 inches. 2. Make a loop in the middle of the two overlapped lines. 3. Run the ends of the two lines through the loop 3 times together. 4. Wet line. 5. Slowly pull tight (Keep both lines uniform) 6. Snip off ends. I learned this knot from my tournament partner. It does'nt have a name that I know of. Flyfisherman use it. It's very easy to tie and you can tie it quickly. I have not had any problems at all with it. It works on both mono to mono, and braid to mono. I have had the same leader on for a couple of months with no problems. The only reason I ever change my leader is because it starts getting short from re-tieing. Like I said, it's very reliable. We've caught tarpon, snook & redfish using this leader. |

I also use the same Knot Mando posted. If I tie my leader on at home I also like to put a dab of super glue on the tag end of the leader to keep it more compact.
lhenly,
I wonder how well that knot would work when using disparate sized lines, i.e. 60 lb fluorocarbon to 20 lb mono? |

I use this one. Easy to tie, works for any size mono and braids. I use it for shocks and topshots.

JR that looks good too!
You can also do that without the improved clinch on the line on the left. If I am joining two lines I do two uni knots.
The one we mentioned before was more for a shock leader for heavy surfcasting like joining 60lb mono to your 14lb mainline. That's when we use the granny knot with the big line over the smaller diameter and then you do a uni with the smaller diameter. |

The knot cast good through all of my surf rods. I usually have a 15- 30lb main with a 50lb shock. The granny knot seems to work loose after a few times hitting the guides.I have tied the improved clinch for tweny years, so that knot just fit me better. The clinch knot was the go to knot years ago when I bass fished. Now most tie a San diego or Mexican knot. I do not like the diego because it takes to much to tie. Hard to tie in a kayak or waste deep in surf, but that is another topic. |
