This may seem silly, but are blue fish good to eat and is it common to keep them?

Cheers,

tp

Cut out all the red meat and they are edible. Not the best, but better than Kingfish in my opion. I don't throw them back.

Bluefish are oily-fleshed like Spanish mackerel but not as strong. Stick the filets of either fish on a grilll to broil or smoke and you'll never ask if they're worth keeping again. You can don't have to do anything fancy to them first, just some Lawry's seasoning salt and pepper will be enough if you haven't time to brine 'em, although that special preparation makes them delicious (just ask Nick Meyer). Don't bother to cut the dark stripe along the midline out; just don't eat it along with the rest. Some folks say cut the tails off and bleed 'em when you first land 'em, but if you simply toss them on ice immediately when caught they taste fine to me w/o that treatment. Bluefish and Smacks can be fried, but are definitely better on the grill.

As fred said, don't throw them away; throw them to ME! Very Happy
