Interesting article on high levels of mercury in pelagic fish. I don't think I'll be eating any shark, my brain functions are slow enough already.

I've heard that kingfish are supposed to have a high level of mercury. I just caught my first king's last week and have not cooked any of it yet. Any info on these fish; mercury level, ways to cook it... Would be much appreciated.

Better check the so-called science used for these warnings. There were two study areas and the second study was rejected as it didn't conform to the desired result.

If you have silver fillings in your teeth, you have been exposed to mercury ever since you have had them. Mercury is natural in various spots in texas. Go out to big bend and its all around you. Given the amount of kingfish a person may eat during the year, I think the risk from this type of exposure is nil. As a matter of fact, given the nature of naturally occuring mercury in runoff in the Rio Grande and other Texas Rivers, I wonder if the mercury they can measure today is any different than what they would have measured in 1650. I bet its not.

I dont think there is that much mercury down in this area. It would mostly be from houston tx to the florida panhandle. There are or were a lot of paper mills in those areas and the rivers that exit into the gulf. When I was a kid we used get mercury out of the old thermometers and play with it and coat silver coins with it to make them shine.

I've been seeing postings on almost every fishing forum about these mercury studies. I have to say that I am skeptical - one of the studies I read specifically states it is studying the link between Mercury and Oil wells. It has long been known that tuna and similar fish have high contents of mecury that naturally occurrs in the ocean. I wonder if these studies are going to be the latest scare tactic to build a case against drilling for oil.

With any luck, oil wells will the next 'high voltage power lines'.
