| my fishin buddy that has been pictured with some nice redfish in my posts cut his hand open today with a fillet knife and wasn't even filleting fish. on his way inside he hook his couch with the tip and lost his footing sliding his hand over the knife. cut him open good. he had to have surgery because the stitches weren't enough. just a reminder to all keep your knives in the sheath and never walk around with it like that. you never know when something is going to happen. on a lighter note though he did catch 2 nice reds and a couple of trout between port a and aransas pass. in the aransas pass channel yesterday afternoon. |

Thanks for the heads up Am3, but my dang knives are too dull to cut me,LOL! I try, but it always seems like I have to cut something hard, thus, no edge .................Kyle _________________ I fish, therefore, I am................Happy! |

| Tell your buddy to hang in there, it will be over soon enough. I had a similar incident involving a fillet knife and surgery. It has been over 10 weeks now and am back to about 90% with my thumb. Listen to the doctors and don't try to get back too soon, the fish will still be there when he gets back. Take care. |

| yeah he already wanted to go fishing sunday. with his hand all wrapped up. i had a similar incident myself involving a trot line and a hook. as we were letting the line out i was baiting hooks. well the hook line wrapped around my finger, and me not knowing i threw it in the water. with the boat moving it yanked my skin off from my middle finger from the knuckle down. skinned it pretty bad and the hook inserted itself right at the crease of my palm at the base of my middle finger. didn't feel anything because the hooks were new, but freaked me out having a hook stuck in my hand. shortly after i gave up freshwater fishing and trotlining all together. strictly saltwater fisher now. |

After watching brother Rodney do his trick with ripping the ribs off with the half shelled red, I decided to try it just like Rodney did. Problem was his technique involved a fillet glove. I sliced one finger, got a bandaid then proceeded to stab myself in the meat of the palm near the thumb muscle. No stitches required but the Mrs. made me go get a tetanus shot.
This on the other hand hurt much more: Careful with those double drop whiting/pomp rigs. I was down at the 55mm fishing for pomps when I let a decent sized whiting flip around while holding him. He was on the top of a double drop rig and flipped the bottom weight and hook back over and on to my thumb. 30 minutes a beer and several tears later I had to push the barb totally out the bottom of the thumb to free myself of it, Goincoastal reminds me that we should all put a tube of Anbesol, that stuff you put on your gums and teeth when you have a toothache. Great tip! I will do that.
After poking the hook all the way through and cutting the barb off, I was able to bag 6 pomps and a 33 inch red on fishbites.

You didn't have anything to snip the barb/eye off of it?
That looks painful.
Myself and a friend were sight casting to big bass here in San Antonio on a local creek, using a small Rapala minnow/diver. We were using ultralights, and you had to whip the rod pretty hard to get it across the creek to these bass.
Well, he went to cast, and I guess he had too much line out of, and when he casted overhead, the rod doubled over, and the line swung around...he got 2 hooks on EACH treble hook stuck in his head. That's 4 out of 6 total hooks. What makes it WORSE is that he was wearing a hat. 2 of those hooks went THROUGH the hat, and into his head, so I couldn't see the hooks to try and help him get them out. I dug at one of the hooks for a good 10 mins and got both of them released from the back of his head...and then wisely removed the hook from the lure. I tried to get the other hook out, but didn't want to kill him...so I handed him the pliers and told him to take care of it. He fought it for a few minutes and finally just yanked them out. I was suprised at the lack of blood and apparent pain...but I guess the scalp isn't the most sensitive part of a person's body. We continued fishing, and he landed a 5.5lb bass on 6lb line, on the same lure, at Ranger Creek off of I-10 between Leon Creek and Boerne. You would never think there was big bass in there if you drove by. |

| your lucky yours came out the other side. mine was in so deep it was scraping on my bone and i was unable to push it through despite many attempts with pliers that hurt like hell. i finally gave up and went to the emergency. a little local anisthetic and a tug of the old pliers (literally used some gerber multipliers to pull it out) by the emergency room doctor and i was outa there. |

Here is a helpful first aid tip...........
For situations like Tyler's, keep some toothache medicine (ANBUSOL or ORAGEL) in your tackle box. When this happens, you can apply either product to "numb" the area. Then push the hook thru & cut it or pull it back out. It's your choice at that point. It just won't be as painful. _________________ GoinCoastal aka Cap'nSherbet |
