Jeff.....You have to know what you end up doing. This topic has really taken off! BK is right, you will get bored. Doing the same thing over and over again will get old. You hit the local bars or clubs 2 or 3 times and you know everyone in town. Corpus will not grow anytime soon. People are moving out all the time. Personally I don't think they want to grow which is consistent with Corpus. Stay in the hill country and pay your 5 g's in taxes. I paid 5500 including insurance this year and that is a joke. If you must move, live on the island. It is less trashy out there. Most important, think about what your wife's hobbies are. If she loves fishing, loves doing the same thing with no variety, then she will like it here.

The city leaves a lot to be desired with the petty crime, (had 1 grande worth of fishing gear stolen from my garage the first week I lived here while I was home) Silly me, I left the garage door open.

If you love fishing, the surf and the bays, kayaking, windsurfing and kiteboarding, this is the place for you!

As far as no variety, there's plenty of variety, you can fish the surf, fish the bay, fish offshore, or fish out of a kayak, a boat or wade fish. What more variety does one need? Laughing

yeah what everyone says is true. i live in a small town of 200 and there is nothing there no stores no restaurants. just a post office and some grain tanks. it is quiet all the time. the only fun we get is going to corpus. i fish every weekend and sometimes during the week. it gets old the only reason i still go is to get out of the house, and is part of the reason i have been wanting to catch sharks, because everything else is getting old. we go to austin every once and a while and i have found that everyone that lives somewhere for any amount of time gets bored. it is human nature. as far as things to do you can do as much as you would like. when we go to austin my wife's family doesn't do anything there, they don't go out or nothing like that. just on fridays to see hutto hippos play and thats about it. so what it all boils down to is what you and your family like to do. because no one place is perfect (there is no rose without thorns) that sort of thing. if you like the coast and want to live closer to the salt water and your family loves it too, and your going to get a job here shoot go for it.

Tyler, you are right about the fishing variety. I love the fishing here. Baffin is my favorite place on the planet. I don't work Friday's and cover 4 chemical plants including one in Corpus. Trust me, when I move out of here next month I will be working in Corpus on Thrusdays so I can fish Fridays. As for the garage theft, it happend to me too. I still plan on leaving the garage open on purpose one evening, setting up a motion triggered camera, and sit in my truck with a 6 pack and wait for someone step in.

First off let me thank ALL of you for giving me/us some things to think about if we do make the move.

I'm all for moving Austin to Corpus so let's get busy... Very Happy

RedMike has pretty much hit it right on to who we are not and who we don’t want to be…no offense RedMike but we’ve done our bar hopping back in college.

I’m in my 30’s and my wife is in her 20’s – both pretty much homebodies that catch a movie every now and then and eat out once in a while…and some boot scootin every now and then – YES I GUESS we are “backwoods/redneck/hillbilly’s” Laughing I’m IT Nerd and she is into the Physical Therapy profession…
WE BOTH LOVE TO FISH. She caught the first keeper speck, red and flounder on the boat. She is a keeper! Very Happy I seriously can’t remember ever getting bored fishing at the coast and neither can she. Catching bass up here that are 12” in length all day with my bro-in-law is getting really old, but it is fishing. Almost forgot about an occasional striper on Lk Buchanan.

Driving crazy/theft…I too lived in Houston for a while. Close to the coast but traffic/road ragers are the same where ever you live so that is a given no matter what. Never had anything stolen but I’m sure it can happen to anyone anywhere at anytime.

Schools and kids– We don’t have any yet but schools will be VERY important and some of you have pointed out the schools are rated high down there. We’ll be doing some research on that too...

Thanks again guys and hopefully I’ll know something soon. Sure is a lot to think about…I’m going to drink a cold one!
Very Happy

For those unhappy here. You to can leave, just do it. But you won't be cause you just like to complain. There is a great big country out there and if you have any skills you can make a living.
I moved here because it is big enough for what I need and small enough to move through. Find a city with no problems, great fishing, low taxes and I'll move there.

And if that city existed, you, myself, and the other 100's of thousands of people on fishing boards would move there as well...thus creating problems, traffic, taxes...etc.

If I ever move anywhere near the coast, it will be Florida, or S. TX during my retirement (I'm only 21, so It'll be a while). Until then, I'll be content with a 2.5hr drive.

Probably a real dumb question in the subject line but I have a delimma I'm trying to work through. I may have the opportunity(a job) to move from the Hill Country(north of austin) to the Corpus area. We are not much into the metropolitan city Corpus is headed for so we'd probably live in the country and commute like we do now. We don't have kids yet but we do plan on it in the next few years. What would you do?
Any direction would be helpful.

I made the mistake of buying a house and having to pay Corpus Taxes and enjoy no benefit from them.. I really see no redeeming value to the city other than the water.. RUN away!

We think alike GC Very Happy I lived through the encephalitis(sp?) scare in Htown back in the 70s, now the little skeeters here can't even bite through my skin,LOL! I sit and laugh while my wife runs for cover,LOL! They land on me, try to bite me, then get tired and fly away,LOL! But, those dang bloodsucking eagles in PortA can kill you with one wing tied behind their back,LOL! I still love fishing enough to deal with them and the crime. One day i'll be there.....Ofcourse, I've always loved the idea of the Keys too, ya know the taxes are high there! But , once again, I do love to fish!.See y'all on the beach..........Kyle

I'm sure Kenai is great Bryan, but I gotta have sun all year round. Cool

Just do it? I am trying! Hard part is getting someone to move into town to buy my house. Snagged, trust me, I know there is much more out there other than Corpus. Corpus is great for people that are satisfied with keeping the same job forever and dealing with the limited opportunities that the city offers. I have a small business in addition to a full time job and I can make more money working a weekend in Houston than 3 weeks down here. There is very little money to make here unless you are a doctor or lawyer.

Jeff, it sounds like you would enjoy living here some come on!

If you can't get rid of your house and want to move, then maybe you want ot paint it or something. I talk to real estate people here every week, and they all say this market is booming, especially on the commercial side. That leads to more sales on the residential side.

Alaska? Question

Too cold for my thin blood. Shocked

But I think Snagged had it right. Corpus is a great place to live. Very Happy I will leave it at that.

Doesn't need paint since it is a year old. It will sell soon enough. Houses around us sold in less than 2 months. Everyone one on our street that moved were heading out of town. 2 of the 3 people that bought the houses on our street just moved from older neighborhoods. I will keep the painting in mind....... that is genius.

I have lived here for four years and have been all over the u.s. If you want to play it safe and see if you like it, lease or rent a condo for at least a year where you think you might want to live and spend your weekends really looking at all areas. If you like the water and the associated maintenance that comes with it, fresh or salt this is a good place. Has a few problems, jobs are tough to find locally, who you know mentality, most I know including myself work out of town. Check out the police crime demographics reports, from the police deparment, this will help isolate the not to stay areas. The taxes and insurance well what can you say, they are high, but, you can on daylight savings, say on a wedsday at 5:00p.m go to the beach in 20 min. the water will look beautiful and nobody around. It is a great place to live and very easy on the nervous system, just hope that Packery Channel doesn't screw it up.

Red

It is just a recommendation. Talk to a realtor or go online. There are a few quick and easy tips to improving the value of your home and reducing the sales time. I did not mean it in a mean way.

Painting is one. Even if the paint is only a year old, fresh paint helps. Another is planting red and blue flowers. Especially along the walk to the door. Another is scrubbing stains off the driveway and garage floor. Trim trees into shapes. With a newer neighborhood like yours, this may not be an issue yet.

Anyway, there are a lot of little things people don't think about that have a subconscience effect on potential buyers. Interesting industry.

And yeah, some of Corpus is still a who you know mentallity, but that is the truth everywhere. There is always that little inner circle of people who actually run everything.
