We moved here because the area has everything we need and isn't so darn crowded as to be a nightmare going anyplace.
Ok, I live on the island, taxes are excessive for comparable properties in other areas, but value growth is GREAT!
Some good schools and decent hospitals, lots of good people who want to enjoy life and not bother anyone.
Not being a metro male, I think shopping is for food, fishing gear, boating equipment, or hunting gear.
Home maintence is greater than some areas of the country, less than others.
The final choice is your's. You might want to rent for a short time before you buy just to get the daily feel of our part of heaven.

What it boils down to is..... Will you ever catch a single red or trout in Town Lake?

If we could trade towns and put Austin where CC is, we'd have the perfect town. I've lived in Austin for 20something years now, from Htown originally, and Austin's a great place to live. The air is clean, the people are nice and the crime is low(for the most part). The only problem with Austin is that, there is no COASTLINE! If I didn't have an 8yr old daughter living here with her mother I woulda been in CC a few years ago. I still try to figure out how to move there every month or so. But it always comes back to the same thing. I can't leave my little girl here. Sure, she'd love the beach visits in the summer, but it would suck the rest of the time. I love to fish. I live to fish. I live to love my little girl. Anybody, IN CC!, interested in meeting a really nice, and attractive, dark haired, middle aged women that likes to eat fish and venison while watching the Simpsons on TV??? I got the gal for you! Ofcourse, you'd have to pass my daddy test 1st. I've tried to get her to move down to CC, Laughing Na, not gonna happen. Anyway, I'll be in Corpus some day.....................Kyle

One of the most interesting threads in a while....Jeff, I grew up in the CC area and now live in Austin - man what a choice. I think that the idea of Austin with a coast would be perfect. I personally could not live in CC, but out on the island like Mr. C and Jerry would be a different story. My taxes are almost non-existent (compared to CC) and there are no mosquitos (pet peeve)...so I have to vote for Austin and visit the beach.....even though every time I'm down I want to move to the island....until I get home. Decisions, decisions. I also lived in SA for 15 years after college - couldn't do it again as that town has changed way too much for me. Rolling Eyes

I will admit the traffic in Corpus is great. If no traffic and fishing are your top priorities this is the place for you. The people are friendly and laid back. I lived in the suburbs of Houston most my life and never had anything stolen. In the last year and a half we had a boat stolen, weedeater, blower, mother-in-laws purse, fishing equipment, and anything we put outside for holidays(pumpkins, christmas decor, etc.) Everyone I know has similar stories and it's not like we live in a bad neighborhood. The houses in our neighborhood range from 155 to 170. Just never leave anything out side for any amount of time and you will be ok.

This is a great place to live if you are one of the fortunate to have a good paying job. It is an exellent place to raise a family. You can teach your
kids the things in life your Dad taught you. Heck, I'm still trying to catch
as big a fish as my 14yr. old daughter caught(36in. drum)and get my picture in the Salty Angler. You can say what you want about petty thief.
In any city this size or larger your going to have it. Keep your stuff locked up and your eyes open. Our evening news is not that bad. People here are
friendly and helpful. Corpus Christi radiates a stress free lifestyle. Life goes by so fast. Don't you want to enjoy as much of it as possible?

If you do move, remember the folks in Corpus Christi think yield signs on the feeder roads are stop signs. In Austin or Houston you would get cursed for backing up traffic at those yield signs.

Funny that 'Y-I-E-L-D' spells STOP here in San Antonio also...It's a cause of a lot of backed up traffic all around this city.

I love the scared people on the feeder that slowly inch further and further through the yield sign and have this terrified look on their face. Pretty soon they are stuck 40 ft. infront of the stop sign, errrrrr, yield sign with cars flying all around them. When I exit off SPID when one of these people is stopped in the middle of the road they act like they don't even see you. Classic. I love it.

Jeff, please buy my house.

Kyle, I have always said that if Lake Travis was the very back of Copano Bay, Austin would be Heaven of Earth!!!!!! But it ain't!!!!! I have always loved living in Austin and I still do. However, I think I would love living in CC more.

I grew up in Victoria and I just love the gulf coast plains. I like the country down there. I miss being able to fish in the salt on a weekday without having to take vacation days. I miss the sound of geese flying over head in the winter.

I live in Leander and work downtown. My drive is 30 miles and it takes 45mins to 90mins each way depending on traffic. I spend 2-3 hours every weekday driving my commute!!!!! IT SUCKS!!!!!!!!! That could be time paddling Brown & Root Flats or Shamrock Cove.

Taxes can not be any worse in CC. I pay $5000 a year for taxes & insurance here. Crime is definitely more of an issue at the coast. Anywhere on the coast, petty theft is always problem because there always more people than jobs in those communities. Oh well.... Lock it up!!!!

I do not relish the thought of returning to mosquitoes but I ain't letting them bugs keep me from what I love to do ... fish the bays & gulf.

I could have moved after my divorce in 1999, but I didn't because I wanted to be close to my kids. They have all graduated and moved on now. I have my 11yo stepson now. When he heads to college, I am heading to the coast.

I am already saving up for Master Padlocks & Chain and Deep-woods Off!!!!

Interesting, lets see, BAD: little more taxes, no real good golf courses, mosquitoes, High humidity, high winds, bad roads, petty thief, etc..
GOOD: less trafic, good schools, fishing & hunting, fishing Very Happy , great people, things getting better, etc..
My choose would be.............Corpus Christi.
I grow up there and it was great place. What keeps me from moving back right now is a job and my daughter. She in the 11th grade now, so it won't be long before she out. The schools here in Austin suck Evil or Very Mad , my daughter goes to Lanier HS and the only good thang about that is that she in the top 10% of her class and in advance classes which are a little smaller Cool . I never could get a good paying job in Corpus, after school I had no job and no money so I joined the Navy. After the Navy I moved back with good amount of money to live while finding a job. After the money I took a good paying job here in Austin. When I moved here from CC I gave away all my fishing thangs but, now I found Bass fishing. I love the Idea of having Austin in Corpus, that is, the city not the libs Confused . All saying I'd like to trade with RedMike if I could. Don't get me wrong I like Austin too, it also is a great place to live and work. Its just not the coast!

I would have to whole heartedly agree with RedMike. Don't even consider living here. It is an OK place to VISIT, but I wish I wasn't stuck living here. If I didn't have to depend on money to live, I would be gone in a second. People are mostly idiots when they drive (i.e. can't drive worth sh^&), oblivious to anyone else on the road and could care less if they cut you off or slow you down, hospitals are average, shopping is non-existent (unless you count going to the malls and getting shot!) and the dining experience sucks. The same food and place, just different owners. Taxes, don't even get me started about the taxes. They are WAY overpriced for what we DON'T get. I've seen better roads in Louisiana. The people on the city council are a bunch of crooks and only look to line their pockets rather than look after and work on upkeep of Corpus. You also live in a more educated area to say the least. There are very few high tech job opportunities (or any that require a college degree) and there don't appear to be any on the horizon. Despite what Big John said about people who don't enjoy Corpus are either inactive or unemployed, you will easily become bored with living in Corpus after living in Austin area. I go fishing or hunting almost every other weekend if possible and I still feel like I am going insane. I grew up here and got the wonderful opportunity and got to live north of Atlanta for 1.5 yrs, but after 9/11 my engineering job dried up and I was forced to look elsewhere. I had to drive approximately 25 miles to work and it took me 1-1.5 hrs each way and I would go back in a second. Corpus feels like a backwoods/redneck/hillbilly city compared to even the smallest big city in Texas.
I know I am going to get flamed bigtime for this, but if it helps keep one person from making what will become the worst decision of their lives, then so be it.
