Could the avid surf fishermen post some good pics of surfs with some arrows and text showing where the guts are. Several people have told me different things as to where the first and second guts are. I'm confused. I understand that the second guts usually produces more than the first.

I tried surf fishing for the second time this past Sunday. Went down S. of BHP. Looked for birds/bait in the water. Notta. Caught several whitings. That was about it. Fantastic weather on Sunday!

here's a thread I bookmarked last year, it's along the New Jersey coast but it should get you started until Tyler posts all of his aerial photos of the PINS shoreline Laughing

Nowdays it easier to go by the sandbars since there are differing opinions. Generally the first gut is the first one off the beach preceding the first sand bar then the second on is the one after the first sandbar and so on. Some, generally shark fishers refer to the gut preceding the first bar as the wade gut since it is not used for shark fishing ( I don't know why as I have seen many sharks there). Then depending on who you are talking to the gut after the first bar is either the second (since its after the wade gut) or the first since it is the first (true) gut. It is more important to concentrate on irregularities in the surf rather than long running bars and guts. Here is a cheesey little diagram I made to help confuse everyone even farther.

Aerial photos here, have fun!

I have that pretty well 'down'. My main need is being able to see/find an irregularity in the surf. I can see changes in the waves, beach, and tell that there is something different in the surf...but that doesn't help me find out which side to fish, how far out, etc..

I did notice that while trout fishing in the WADE gut (first one from the beach), any little hole or small washout will hold bait, and trout will hang around them. My step-bro and I found a little hole about 15 yds off the beach, about the size of a small bathtub, and only about 6-8" deeper than the surrounding water. We caught 3 or 4 trout off of that same spot.

However, there was no way to see it from the bank...we just happened to walk into it.
