i'm looking to buy a surf rig for just general fishing. i'm not looking for a shark rig yet i want to start gradually. what do you guys suggest using for a long rod and a short rod. mty wife bought me and abu garcia 6600 brute with a 7' ugly stic intracoastal, Is this a good short rod??. I have a 9 footer that i can cast to the second bar. but the reel is not that great and is the biggest reason i can't get out further. looking to buy something in the 12 to 14' range and a reel that can hold over 300 yds of line. any suggestions.

Any penn GS series reels will be fine on the long rod, they range from a 525 to a 555. go to ebay and search penn gs. They dont have a levelwind, if you prefer a levelwind reel Penn makes a line they call the GTI series. Diawa sealine reels are also good. You should be able to pick up any of the above mentioned reels for around $100 or under on ebay or between $80-$150 new at the store. If you are looking to spend a little more Avet makes some good reels in the $150 and up range. Ebay is definateley the way to go, just make sure the seller has a good feedback rating and you will be fine. Here is a couple of links to some decent reels on ebay. The 6600 is a good reel. I have two (trout/red) rods, both 7'6" one has an abu 5500, the other has a 6500. My two long rods are a penn 545 GS on a tica 12' heavy action rod, the other is a penn 320 GTI soon to be on an Okuma solaris 10' rod that I got on ebay, dont know much about the okuma's but they look like good wellbuilt rods but I will let you know the first time I use it. Take a look at some of these

Best: Breakaway 11-9 with Penn 535Mag'd or Diawa GW30.

contact Nick @ www.breakawayusa.com

Good: Tic and Ocean Master 12-ft with same reels as above.

If you really want to get a bait out there then these rods with a Penn 525Mag or a GW20 using no more than 20# test mono and 30-ft of shock leader.

I sometimes use braided backing on my reels but have over 150 yards of mono on top. You only really cast the mono.

I do not know about Okuma's baitcaster/levelwind reels, but their spinning reels are the great. I believe they are the best spinning reel for the money.

Hey GC, nice meeting you last week. If you want a real "long rod" get a 2pc/1pc from Breakaway. The 11/9 that Flak mentioned is also a great rod, but that's more for pompano and breakaway brand weights. The 2pc/1pc is for a full 8nbait type situation, or for really long casts. As for short rods in the surf, ten feet is short. Actually, a nice breakaway 9'6"+- will do. The new 10'6" is a really nice rod and it comes in a light or heavy action. I'm getting ready to buy a 10'6" light pretty soon. It's rated for 1oz to 2oz? In other words, it will cast a spoon way out there, and that is a big + when you're sight casting to jacks or whatever is under the birds. I'll trade you a 2pc1pc(you pic the color) for a Loomis GLX 9' 8wt Very Happy (no kidding)

For reels, Abu's cast a long way, but don't hold enough line for a few fish out there(great for pomps and such). Like Vern said, any of the gs reels are good. But don't bother with a 545 because it's the same diameter of the 555. You can can cast either one the same distance, but the 555 has more line capacity because it's wider. I fished for sharks for a whole year with just a 525mag and a 535mag, and never broke off. Caught plenty of fish to <6' (I did use the 9/0s for larger baits)

For line, mono is the best casting. Suffix Tritanium is my choice(you probably saw the orange line in my new tackle closet last week Wink ). I almost always back it with PP or Tuffline. I cast Braid sometime, but it won't beat mono in distance. It just doesn't come off the reel as easy as it goes on the reel.

With all that said, I'm spending most of my time in my yak offshore using 7.5' boat rods and trout rods. You can catch decent sharks, and it will open up a whole new world of fishing possibilities. Imagine yourself in a 2 acre school of spanish, smacking into your yak while 7' sharks look at you from beneath....Dozens of 6' Tarpon surfacing all around you !......I've been there. And I'll be back asap!. Forget the long rods and buy some Loomis boat rods with Nautil reels( I'll be a sponsor someday,LOL!) and learn to bust through the surf, and into fisherman's heaven. Big boats can't do it, nor can shore fishermen, only yaks can get you into these places. Places where the fish are everywhere, just like your dreams, well...my dreams anyway. Good luck, and let's go fishing sometime............Kyle

Stay away from Okuma. Some of their spinners are good, but I don't know which ones.

Kyle, we have the same dreams Very Happy . Forgot to mention breakaway rods in the post above. That is what I want next when I save up a little $$$. I just got an Okuma Solaris rod off of ebay. 10' 3-8 oz. Really like the feel of it so far and can't wait to try it out next weekend.

Kyle,

Good post. What reel are you thinking about putting on this rod? I'm thinking of getting the same rod to target those way out tarpon next year. I've already got an 11'9" with a GW30. Great rig!

the okuma cd series are the only good ones they make anything from a cd-40 and a nice 7'6" rod for plastic and lures to the cd-90 and 12' surf rod for anything else that tickles your fancy.

Right on Vern, Wink And Mapag, I haven't gotten that far yet. I have a 525m and a nautil spinner(I buy blanks and decide which way to go later), but I think this is an Abu rod. I think a magged Blue Yonder or a 6500c3ctME would fit this rod perfectly. I know I didn't recomend Abu earlier, but that doesn't mean an Abu isn't perfect for anything at all. An abu will kick a jack's butt, but it might be a little soft for the tarpon. That's where the Nautil comes in. A little 6500 Nautil will handle a 6' tarpon if it's loaded with 30#PP. I know, I fought one on this reel this year and woulda won had a spanish not interfered with my line. It's a tough choice. I prefer baitcast reels but spinners have the advantage of being able to cast braid, and also they are water(proof)- resistant, at the least, they are better than bait casters when it comes to saltwater. Now ya got me wondering what to do? I guess I'll think on it for a bit. Thanks...............Kyle

I would rather put an abu on it but I don't think it would take a 6' tarpon. I really don't want another spinner, but the braid advantage is huge! Maybe a 525M with a little braid backing? I dunno? I'll let y'all know when I do it.

(abu might win just because I don't have a nice abu, just a c3, which reminds me, this reel is for lures so it needs to be a levelwind. OK, a 6500c3ME) do they make that? I think so. I'm not an Abu guy so forgive my inaptitude...........Calcutta comes to mind! LOL! I'll figure it out when the blank gets here Laughing
