It might be the time of the year or the time of the day but am I the only shore fisherman who has a hard time finding good(I mean gooood)dead shrimp or live that stays alive long enough to put on your hook???When I have the chance to get away and fish, first thing I have to think about is where I'm going to fish. Then where can I get the best bait without going way out to far off course. Now, I'm not going to name any bait shops in paticular that I've experenced bad bait for too much money. This might sound weird but the best dead I have found(during hours) is at HEB seafood counter. They sell head-on,fresh enough to eat, dead Lg. shrimp for $3.99 lb.Not frozen in water, not falling apart, not so small you can't use it,and not so stentch, fish wouldn't even want it.Now nothing against local bait shops,I always get my tackle and some bait from them.I just wanted to hear from you guys about this topic.Where do you think, for the money, the best dead and live is around the area.

I had a bad experiance with cosway bait, bought shrimp and frozen mullet one time and neither was very fresh and seemed a bit pricy. Now on my way from Edna there is almost always someone selling shrimp on the side of the road. Small eating shrimp from $3.00 to $3.50, Always fresh.

Clem's and the Bait bucket. I had a bad day at Cosway also, so I stay away from there. I think it just happened to be the guy working there but I know the girl at Clems, and the BB is right there where I get block Ice at the Exxon at Waldron, so that's what I do Rolling Eyes ...............Kyle

Ps, Clem's is under the NE corner of the JFK and the BB is on the feeder rd just E of Waldron.

We always buy dead shrimp and use the cleaning table later at Billings. I couldn't remember the name of the place until finding it in an old e-mail just now. The last time we went down the beach with Billings' shrimp, a large part of them were still kicking when we called it a day on account of rising winds, waves and current. Believe it or not, Dad used to complain the bait from there was TOO fresh because it was hard to peel, and might even spike you if you weren't carefull. Laughing

Any time we have shrimp left over from a trip down the beach, we stick it in quart Ziploc freezer bags and save it for trips to Choke Canyon. That way, we always have the best fresh bait for surf conditions, and can use the frozen/refrozen stuff later at the lake where waves and current are not factors. We frequently dip the shrimp in stink bait anyway, so it doesn't matter to the catfish if the shrimp is freezer-burnt from 2 or 3 refreezings.

I usualy hit Peoples St. as I did today. The last boat on the left had the best today. Ten pounds for $25.00 and they were still poping when I baged 'em up for the freezer. This bunch is for the coming drought when everybody is out of fresh dead, then instead of $4.00 a pound fresh thawed I can get my own out. If you put it up in quart bags with a little water on 'em just to cover then they come out nice when thawed in a little sea water.
