|
|
Hey Johnny French, Charlie, Tyler, Tarzan or any other pompano fisherman out there....Maybe you can answer me a good question.
I have been searching ebay lately for some hooks for pompano. I want to set up triple or double drop rigs with the correct size hooks that are also very sharp in the same sense. I have been very satisfied with gamakatsu hooks but I was curious about others opinions. J-hooks or circle? size 1 2 3 or 1/0? Any particular brands?
What size hook brand and style of hook do you use to catch pompano? _________________ -Skip |

| Not too much experiance with them yet on pomps, but so far "owner" circle hooks in the 1/0 or a little larger seem to result in far more hook ups versus regular hooks when I am fishing for bait with fish bites. Havent tried bait-baits yet with the supplied hooks but I am looking forward to them. |

| Try 2/0 octopus/beak big red ultra point hooks by mustad. Your going to catch reds on them also. Its the same size and style hook on the breakaway double drop rig. -good luck-[/i] |

Skipjack, at one time I posted that info, down to the exact order number from Cabela's. Maybe Tyler can dredge it up again. I think the important thing is to get a thin-wire circle hook. I found an old empty container just now with these bits written on it: Eagle Claw, Saltwater, Lazer Sharp, 2/0 Seaguard, L197G. However, if I remember correctly, that last order number wasn't exactly what Cabelas had in stock. Will have to get some more info to you later as my tackle box is miles away.
Thin wire is easiest to thread on the standard pompano bait: Fishn' Strip and half a peeled shrimp. Hopefully, if a 40-lb stingray finds it before the pomps do, the hook will straighten. However, have landed several over-sized reds on them w/o their pulling loose. You can always bend the circle back into them if they start to loose their curls. Check the points frequently and replace them if they break off; had one batch early on that was brittle-tipped, although the problem seems to have been corrected now. |

Thats kind of what I had in mind. Was super sharp thin circles.
I have caught a couple of pompano in my day as well so I would just choose A size of hook that would fit in their mouth.
I just watned to get the word from the pros mouths _________________ -Skip |

Gamakatsu makes an Octapus Circle hook that is pretty awesome. I use them in 6/0 with fishbites for reds they should work for pompanos as well. _________________ A bad day fishing still beats a good day at work! |

Finding the right hook to rig up a live Pompano is essential.. usually 18/0 circles are optimal for Pomps up to 2lbs. Free-lining them works every time for a toothy critter.
Now I really couldn't tell you how to actually catch the pomps or the best respective hooks for that feat. I've got lucky before with fishbites/shrimp and very small circles. _________________ - Oz

When I was catching them last week, I was using a flounder hook the entire time. I only had one fish get off the hook, and that was because I was messing around with it (gloating to Jay that I was the Great American Sportsman, etc.) and not really trying to reel it in.
I did catch another pomp on a small circle hook that I got from the Breakaway store.
Jay was using a 3/0 Mustad straight shank hook and was getting excellent results.

Eagle Claw Circle Sea 2/0-3/0 circle hooks. Come sharp, stay sharp a long time in the surf which a lot of hooks cannot claim. _________________

Thanks for the pointers guys.
And thanks for that tip Oz. If I remember correctly, last time I caught a shark I was with you and I caught it on a live pompano with an 18/0 circle...LOL....Remember that guarunteed shark you said if I dropped that pomp right before the 2nd bar and it turned out to be a STINGRAY!!!
I'd have to agree 18/0 circles go real good in the mid section of a small pomp..LOL _________________ -Skip |
