|
|
I was heading to the jetties on PINS last Saturday, 11/6, and On the way down, probably about the 40mm or so, there was a camp and they had about 5 rods setup directly in the MIDDLE of the beach, right between the dunes and the water. This was a WIDE section of beach, and the rods were a good 50ft+ off the water. I wasn't sure if the lines were out (almost dark, no kind of lights on or near the rods/tackle), so I was forced to go between the rods and the dunes...no prob. As I drove by the rods, I realized that the lines weren't out...but why would you put your rod holders and rods in the very center of the beach?!?!
On the way back to the pavement, I again passed this camp. THIS TIME, the lines were out in the water, and the rods were in the same spot, 50ft off the beach, at least. I was heading down the beach and there was an SUV in front of me...and he went between the rods and the water, and miraculously didn't catch any of their lines....
At this time, it was pitch black...and even with my lights/brights on, I could barely see the rods. I had to get on the brakes pretty hard (I was going 20mph tops due to the soft sand), and swerve in a rut, which is tough enough as it is, just to miss the 10 freaking rods they had setup in the center of the beach.
Anyone else see this? They could've at least put a few lights or glowsticks on them...
I wouldn't be suprised if they got mowed over that same night. I almost hit them, and I'd consider myself more 'keen' and 'cautious' then most people driving the beach. |

That's what bullbumpers are for.
Seriously rods ned to be tended and kep at the surf line. At night peopel need to make camps visible , Glow sticks, lanterns and camp fires are all good visual cues for a travel weary beach driver that he is approaching people. I am considering some very bright auxillery lighting for my truck. Some of thos lightforce light may do the trick. |

Some might be inclined to think the rods and lines were put there intentionally to create a barrier, but the British have a saying that fits this behavior: | Quote: | | Never put down to bloodymindedness that which is as readily attributable to stupidity. | If you don't get the drift of that, go ask Nick.
Seriously, some reflective tape on the rod holders might make them easier to see, but there's no way to mark the lines at night. Best to tend the rods regularly and move them back and forth at the water's edge with the tides. |

This weekend when we stopped to visit Big Lou and friends at their campsite, I noticed they had about 4-5 of those driveway reflectors on their own little poles set up on each side of their camp site. I thought that was a very cheap yet smart idea!!!!

Those are a very good idea Coastal. I think some reflective tape on pvc stakes can work handilly as well. I have run up on a dark campsite in the midle of the road on a foggy night before and it is no fun.
The best thing to do is try to politely educate people. I believe someone made the mistake of stopping to talk to me when I was boxing a nice trout and my wife took offense. Sorry about that, she's a Yankee. |

lol
I could understand if the rods were at the waters edge during high tide...and then the tide went out.
But these were in the middle of the beach, 20ft+ from the highest tide I've ever seen (I know it gets to the dunes, but I've never seen it).
Not only that, but they built a curb around all of it out of sand... |
