Well yes you can run up and down the beach and burn alot of gas and hope you find them. Or sometimes it's just nice to park the truck, setup camp and put out the long rods and wait for the fish to come through. May not be the most effective way of catching fish but think about this. If you start heading south down PINS one day and the current is heading north and all of the bait and fish are heading north do you have a better chance at catching the fish. I have had this argument with many people about bouncing down the beach and chasing the fish and setting up and waiting. Your mileage may very, but one thing you never tell a fisherman, is how to fish. Everyone has there own way and as long as your are having fun and enjoying the experience, catching fish is just a bonus. So you go ahead and chase those fish up and down the beach and catch them all. SM _________________ That's why they call it fishin', not catchin' |

how can you call it fishing . you arent even holding your pole!!!!
and yes you do have a better chance of catching fish if the current is headed north cause the more you move south.. the more schools of fish you come across..
whereas if they were headed south then you would catch less. |

If I feel like busting my chops all the way up and down the beach and rubbing my crotch raw then I will do it. I have done it many times and caught plenty of fish.
Lately, I prefer to catch sharks. Most long rodders are targeting sharks.
You get me a report where you are slamming sharks by moving up and down the beach and I will change my approach at fishing the beach.
Trout and reds and macks just don't do it for me anymore. Been there done that. Boring. How about getting in the kayak and slamming sharks and everything else from your kayak.....Now thats a rush.
If you caught so many fish lets see some pics. Got to have some proof behind that talk there Big Guy.
And you could have been more creative in the way you approached the subject. You are making yourself look worse with your attitude. Just my thoughts on it. Maybe I am mis-interpeting you. _________________ -Skip |

It's just another way of fishing.I was raised fishing like that on South Padre. Also schooled in all other forms of fishing from Sabine to Boca Chica.
Sometimes I wade.
Sometimes I drift.
Sometimes I troll.
Sometimes I fish bottom.
Sometimes live.
Sometimes cut.
Sometimes artificial.
Fishing is what an individual wants it to be.
I would'nt go throwing the word kook around coastal communities.
This is a pretty polite group of people that frequent this message board.
In most surfing circles calling someone a kook can earn you a serious beating. _________________ "If you love something let it go.If it comes back to you gaff it and throw it in the icechest."

If a gentleman wants to throw out a long pole, more power to him. If you ever fished for flathead catfish, you sure don't speed all over the lake to do it. Every long pole man is targeting a certain type of fish, and beleive me they know what they are doing... Whats wrong with seating around with friends and having a really good time relaxing? Fish do tend to move up and down the beach all the time. I personally would like to sit around once in awhile and renew old and new friendships once in a while. Good luck to all the longpolers out there. OSOLONGHORN |

Dude!
Youn need to fish with me if you think fishing long rods is lazy! I promise you, I'll keep you busy. You might even want to stop and take a break.
There is a lot more to it than chunking a bait and sitting there waiting for a bite. I knw some people do that, but they are really not there to catch fish as much as they are to soak in the breeze and relax.
To each his own. |

Cracker,
No need to fluster!
As we age and mature we all go through different stages of Sprotsmanship.
1) As a BEGINNER we start by experiencing the trill of the sport.
2) Past that we develop what is known as the GAME-HOG stage were we think we have to out do everyone else with the best catch or the biggest harvest.
3)Then comes the TECHNIQUE stage were we value the technique used more than the actual size of the harvest.
4) We then develop into the TROPHY stage where we only harvest what is considered a trophy by the standards we place on ourselves.
5) last but not least is the SPORTSMAN stag were we no longer value the size of the trophy or the technique, but merely appreciate the opportunity to be a part of the great outdoors.
We all go through these stages and some of us are in more than one at the same time.

Cracker,
I really did not like your post. Who are you to judge me, or anyone else? We pay as much as you do to get onto the beach, and can do there whatever we please (within reason). And why do you care if people have long rods out? According to your mentality, they're leaving more fish for "experts" like you, so you should be happy about it, right?
I come down all the way from Austin, and for me, it's as much about relaxing, as it is about catching fish. After driving 250+ miles, I'm not that excited about doing more driving. As long as I'm catching something, I'm perfectly content staying in one place, enjoying myself, good company, and the beach. If i see activity, I'll get out there and throw a lure or free-line from the bar. If it slows down, I'll just put out a long-line or two, and sit back and relax.
I guess we all have different priorities... Don't judge people for having different opinions, as long as we're respectful of one another.
kostya
P.S. I did see one guy on the beach this weekend that kind of irked me. He had his truck parked long-way right in the middle of the low-road, blocking the entire road. He was alone, sitting in the bed, drawing or painting. Had to get into the rough stuff to get around him. That was disrespectful. _________________ рыбак |

Yes, we can run up and down the beach and have more times than most but there's a time to just sit back and let them come to you. As Billy calls it "Bait Soaking" has its own rewards. _________________ Magic |

I prefer to fish like Cracker, but don't feel as "strongly" about it as he does. One day, I'll have a long rod but I like eating trout and redfish too much. |

Charlie just about summed it up for me, the different stages. Also SurfRunner makes a good piont, I dont know a time I went and set out my poles that I dont stop doing something, and often times than not, a short sit down is a welcome thing. To each his own, and as long as you have a good time doing what you are doing!! |

Did anyone notice that Cracker joined the board on Nov 9th and has all of two posts to his credit (the two in this thread)?
He just hooked a few for himself here.
How boring is that, Cracker? To just put up a post or two and wait for bites? Sounds to me like you may be envious of those with longer poles than yours.
Amazingly, however, at least one of us actually learned something about fishing on the beach from this thread. So it wasn't all for naught. _________________ Chad Landry

I am with Golla on this!!! He nailed it!!!
I enjoy all of it!!! Beach hopping, long rodiing, backbay yakking for reds (my personal favorite and expertise), flyfishing for Guadalupe trout, perch jerkin on the fly in the San Marcos, the white bass run, yakkin lakes for big bass........... it's all good!!!
Don't be so closed minded!!! Variety is the spice of life !!!!!!!!!!! _________________ GoinCoastal aka Cap'nSherbet |

Most times I dont know how im going to fish until I start loading the truck and then I wont know where im going until I get there. I may fish the surf or the laguna. I may take the kayak or wade. I may use live bait or dead or just throw plastics and spoons. But what ever I decide I know that I will enjoy doing it, wether I catch some thing or not. _________________ Fishing and Kayaking its a rough life but somebody has to do it.
