|

Has anyone ever gotten a speeding ticket while being down on the beach? We were coming back on Sunday afternoon, doing about 40-45 in a deselate area between camps (we always slow down for camps and for passing cars) right around the 11mm, and as we passed an on-coming park ranger he turned on his lights, turned around, and pulled us over. It turned out to be the same guy we chatted with the day before, and he gave us The Speech, "in leu of the ticket". He was really cool about it, and let us go. So I was just wondering if anyone has ever gotten an actual speeding ticket on the beach. I know I've seen people doing at least 60mph ever since Ivan Jr buldozed the sand into the autobahn.
Going 25mph just seems so slow... When you're coming in, you just want to get there and start catching fish! On the way out, you just want to get home, and start cleaning up and salvage what's left of the weekend. Maybe it's just me, but 25mph seems a bit unreasonable... Like a 60-mile long school-zone.

40-45 seems a bit fast to me for driving on any beach. My wife and kids don't fish, but they love playing on the beach. Any beach. My wife and her friends are into collecting shells and such, and they'll load up the kids and go places where the tourists don't normally go. Sometimes that's down PINS in her best friend's 4WD. And they don't always stay near a "camp" or even near the vehicle for that matter.
If I were there and you drove by my kids at 40+ mph, you'd get the finger and a loud yell. If you drove by at 60+, you may get the rear of your vehicle "peppered". Of course, I'd probably be out in the water, so neither really applies.
The rules are there for a reason, and it ain't to make the Park Rangers feel more powerful.
I am glad that you got off with only "the speech".
If driving 20-25 makes the trip too long, don't go so far. And remember that you have to drive back up just as far as you've driven down.
I hope you don't take this personally, but I think you should slow it down. _________________ Chad Landry

| I got stopped 3 weeks ago in the same situation you describe. Speeding , no seatbelt (for God sakes ) , and my license expired on my b'day 6 months ago. Long story short , I got a $35 ticket for driving with an expired license. I was doing 40 in a 25 (about the 12 mm). No seat belt? I guess he could have been a lot rougher. My license has been renewed. I thought the state sent you a card when it's renewal time (4 years). Oh well. |

Chad,
I respect your reply, and for the record (and the flogging), I wasn't driving. Down on the beach, you can see things (camps, vehicles, people walking) really far, and have plenty of time to slow down. I like to slow down when passing camps and people, just to check out what they're catching, what they're using, etc... (and of course the orbs) I myself don't usually take it over 35, partially for the sake of my suspension. I was just curious as to how strict the rangers were down there, and if anyone else has had a simliar experience.

For those who know me and have ridden with me, this will come as a laugh as I am about the slowest pokiest guy driving down there mainly because I am cautious and also because my suspension rides very rough so going fast in bumpy conditions is not an option. One time in Little Shell where the speed limit is 25mph Ranger Perky turned on his lights and pulled me over when my speedometer read 28mph. I asked him how fast was I going and he said "too fast" and told me to slow down and let me go on my way.

This is a tough one. I'm with you on empty areas - I find myself doing 40 to 45 MPH if beach is in good shape. Once I'm within 10 miles of the pavement I slow down to ~30 MPH and once at the 5 mile 4WD only sign I'm down to posted limits. I have seen the rangers checking those areas more often than any other area.
I also make a point to creep thru campsites.
I was almost run over fishing with TW two years ago by a white short box fleetside Z71 doing >70 MPH. That's when they should tar and feather the speeder. If TW or I were packing there would of been bullets flying at that A-Hole. _________________ Ahh sand between my toes! |

I really don't like to go more than 35 MPH because of washouts. Alot of the time, you won't be able to see one until it's too late. You have to be going slow enough where you can pratically stop on a dime or make a quick manuever to avoid them. I have literally seen a front axle ripped off of a vehicle because they fell into a 2'x2' washout area doing 45+MPH. Not to mention if anyone in your party were to get hurt during such an event. As far as the rangers go, they are all fair people. They really don't ask much of anyone. They just want everyone to be safe and have fun. They do, however, have the authority to issue a ticket because you are driving down a state/ federal beach "road". Would be like you speeding down IH37 and getting pulled over by the DPS. I'm sure anyone who has been to PINS has gone over the speed limit at least once, including myself. (Ok.....I go over MOST of the time, but when near camps or people I slow down not only for safety, but for courtesy.)

| I just wish the rangers would follow the speed limit. I understand if they have to get down the beach for businees, but isn't that one of the reasons for having lights and siren on the vehicles? |

| I feel alot of people drive to fast on the beach.Just because the beach is smooth does not mean that we should drive to fast. Now days there are alot more people with kids and dogs on the beach.I know that alot of people slow down when passing someone fishing or camping, but there is alot of people that just keep on trucking. Our national parks are family oriented and should stay that way.I do not want to always be looking over my shoulder wondering when the next one is coming and if my family is OK. |

Dang!!You guys would have hated me and my friends beach driving habits in high school! We were idiots!
65mph in a celica from Padre to the Mansfield jettie.Absolutley destroyed the car.The year before we were towing eachother on a kneeboard with a
100' rope when the guy driving decided to take the 1st sandbar around some people instead of stopping and walking the board past. This went on for about a quarter mile and seemed real fun until the bar dropped off to around 4 feet deep.
Another vehicle destroyed!
I actually miss being carefree about reckless behavior but we're lucky we never killed anyone and only a few of us were killed.
Amazing how behavior patterns change.
I drive like my grandfather now. _________________ "If you love something let it go.If it comes back to you gaff it and throw it in the icechest."

| I am with the speeds a little between camps and slows way down around people group. I am guilty of setting the cruise(yikes) at 45 in some areas. I also like to slow down when I am looking for structure to fish. We all know the drive can get boring but we must be alert to people around us. I am trying to slow down by leaving the house earlier. And avoid the crowded weekends. |

I've seen a ranger pull over a punk kid around midnight for doing donuts in the sand. He wasn't really speeding, but got a ticket anyway.
I believe the speed limits are there for a reason & we should follow them. However I'm as guilty as the next guy for going a little too fast when I've got clear sailing in front.
